Subject: Traveling in Sweden/Germany/Ireland (and hoping to train)... Suggestions/Advice..??
I am going to be in Sweden (Gothenburg) and Germany (Frankfurt) the beginning part of next week for work...  I have a light week as I'm tapering into a HIM next weekend back here in the states...  So I could stick with some easy stuff in and around the hotels...  Unless anyone has any better suggestions (or I stumble across some cool trails that I just have to run while there)...

However, the following week I'm leaving for southern Ireland...  and I'll be bouncing around there for about 10 days...  primarily golfing and drinking guinness...!!!    I definitely want to try and get in some decent training while I'm over there...  Having never been there I'm not sure how practical that is...???  Wondering if anyone has any experience in the area or any suggestions...  The areas we are staying in include Doolin, Tralee, Killarney, Kinsale, Kilkenny and Dublin...  I'd hate to miss out on some really cool training area while over there...  I've been poking around the internet, but it would be great to hear from someone that's been there...

Any thoughts/suggestions/advice would be appreciated...

Southern Ireland is awesome.   I've  been thru all those towns.   Is this after your HIM???    Just go and enjoy yourself

You could always run along the edge of the  Cliffs of Moher for some increased HR training

Highlights of our trip were Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, and Dingle.  We also stayed at Ballynahinch Castle (not really a castle, but gorgeous).  Glendalch was nice as well

It was quite intentionally scheduled for after the HIM...!!!   I've read about the Cliffs of Moher...  and I could see how that would make for an interesting run....    Not familiar with the Burren or the Dingle...  Will definitely look into them though...

Yeah man, just enjoy after the HIM. I went to Killarney a few years back and rented a bike to get around. I mean, don't expect a Felt DA or anything, just some crappy hybrid but it was a fun way to explore!

The Dingle Peninsula (Dingle is a town near the end) is reputed to be as nice if not nicer than the Ring of Kerry and much less crowded.  You can even dive there if you're so inclined   I'm jealous

If you are going to travel by train, get your Europass before you leave the States.  It will be much cheaper.

Pack a backpack if possible.  Getting from train to hotel and back will be much easier.

In Germany, get a Radler.  It is a summer specialty - beer with a bit of lemonade.  VERY tasty!

I wonder if that dolphin is still swimming around in Dingle?  Named Fungi or something like that.  Weird tourist attraction.  I saw him swimming just fine, and a lot cheaper than the people on the boat.

What Chris said...

I've been to Ireland several times and Counties Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Cork (the West and Southwest, basically) are really good terrain for training...lots of rolling hills.  The hilliest area is just west of Killarney...the Gap of Dunloe would be a cool ride or possibly even a long run (it's a mountain pass with basically no motor vehicles allowed...7 miles each way with a big hill at each end...I walked it round-trip when I was there in 2000).  I haven't ever trained in Ireland, but the one caution I'd put out there is that the roads are narrow and where there are shoulders, those are used as passing lanes (even where you wouldn't believe a car could fit by).

I second the part of the county lanes.  They're narrow.  I jogged everywhere we went.  I saw a lot of bike riders around Galway.  It was pouring down rain and they were all riding as if nothing was unusual about it.

If you can get a cycle in around Dingle (its pretty close to Tralee) there is a hell of a climb over the Conor pass. Make sure your brakes are in good working order for the decent Laughing . Hope you dont mind the rain as I live in Southern Ireland & we get plenty of the stuff !

No specific sights to recommend, but I like running in new cities as a way to scout out and see what's around.  Don't worry so much about pace, slow down and pay attention to the things around you (partly so you don't get lost, partly just because it's new and different).

Phoenix Park in Dublin is supposed to be a great place to run (I think it's the largest city park in Europe?).  An early morning run around the little canel (aka the River Liffey) would probably be pretty cool.  But any run through any of the villages in Ireland must be pretty cool.

The coolest bike ride I've ever done in my life was done when I was in County Clare, just outside Ballyvaughan- I borrowed a hybrid bike from the inn we stayed at and biked down into town.  A bit scary as you bike on the "wrong" side of the road, and there are no shoulders and lots of tour busses, but it was certainly an experience to remember.  People do bike more over there than here for errands and the like, given the high gas prices.  Helmets did seem to be a bit uncommon in Ireland, at least 4 years ago, so you may want to bring an old one with you if you want to ride.

When in Gotenburg, or Göteborg as we say in Sweden, try to have a run in the botanical garden. It is really nice scenary and a few short hills. I'm from Stockholm so I don't know any great trails, but in Sweden you can run basically wherever you want to in the woods and in parks.
Hope you will have a great time.
I'm heading to Stockholm myself July 16th and staying for 4 weeks. I'm going to do my very first 10K there August 15th, it's a midnight run called Midnattsloppet.

There is one in Gotenburg to on August 22nd if you are still there then. Just as a fun little warmup for your HIM.
