Subject: Best pedals for ironman?

My first IM is in November and I'm in the market for new (to me) pedals.  Right now I'm on an old pair of mountain bike pedals.  They work fine for sprints/oly's, I even did one HIM on them...but don't really want to be on them for 112 miles.  Suggestions?

ETA:  Should buying used be an option or should I just go new?

I recently just upgraded my mountain bike pedals to roadie pedals .. now that I'm a roadie this year. also training for my first Ironman in November.  We picked up a pair of Time Carbon's at Wiggle.com and they are really nice. Stable, seem durable so far, a little difficult to get into, but i'm getting used to them.

Buy 'em new. then you get the warranty.

I like my Shimano Ultegra pedals. Not a problem in a couple thousand miles.

I started with speedplay's and they gave me knee and IT band problems. So I switched to Look pedals and have had no issues. There was just too much float for me in the speedplay's.

Heh...  I started with Look pedals but knee problems forced to search for something with more float.  I've been using Speedplay for 15+ years.  Can you say YMMV?

I have ultegra pedals...bigger platform with float. When asking around at bike stores that is what all the shops recommended for me and my daughter who was 11.

I ride spd mtb pedals in the winter and on my cross bike and I think you will be pleasantly surprised the improvement.

Had Look pedals but the lack of float was wearing on my knees.  Switched to Speedplay and love them.

Didn't have Look pedals... but had knee issues... switching to Speedplays back in 2005 fixed all my issues. I love the float. I even tried to switch to the ones with adjustable float, but they were too hard to clip in/out of and made my knee hurt. The cheap Speedplays w/out adjustable float are great!

Now, when I switched, I also had to buy a new cycling shoes that would accomodate the Speedplay clip housing.

I raced the original SPD's for years and they were the only pedals I'd use.

But as I got older my knees didn't agree with the newer ones, so I went with the X series Speedplays.  I've run them since.  Got Ti on my road bike, stainless on my TT.

I upgraded my pedals last year.  I went with the Look Keo Carbon's.  Got a killer deal on ebay direct.  Plus if you look really hard when I go by they have an Ironman M-dot on them.  I'm convinced that makes them faster Laughing  Luv 'em!

I use Look Keo, the carbon ones (just because...).  I'm not sure I understand the comments about float -- with these pedals, you can get different amounts of float (from zero to a lot) by swapping out the cleats.

I've always had the Look Keo's with 0 degrees swing. Only in periods when my (runners)knee gives me cr*p I take the yellow one with 4,5degrees swing.
Great stuff.
