I know there's a lot of factors with the brands, the way, they measure, etc, etc. But if you ride a XXcm road bike, did you find your tri bike was the same size frame? Just wondering.

Mine aren't the same. I ride a 52 road bike and a 51 tri bike. It will depend on the brand of bike as well.

I ride a 50 road bike and should be on a 50 or smaller tri bike (actually riding a 51 right now).

My touring/road bike (surly lht), and my tt bike (cervelo p1) are the same size 56cm, my fixie (surly xc) is a 54cm. It's gonna all depend on fit... They may be the same, they may not.

Yep, this is going to be all over the map, varying from person to person and manufacturer to manufacturer. I doubt that you find any useful correlation.

Mine

Road: 54cm Litespeed Tuscany, 54cm Specialized Allez
Tr: 55cm Litespeed Blade, 54cm Cervelo P2

They tried to sell me a 51cm Cervelo when I bough t my first tri bike a few years back but I was way too cramped on it.

  • Road is a Trek 5200 OCLV - 60 cm
  • Tri is a Cervelo P2- 58 cm

If you're shopping step one is a fitting. Then find a bike that suits your geometry preference. Then get fit on the new ride. Then be pimpin' it

Road: Bianchi FG Lite 49cm
Tri:  Javelin Sizzano 47cm
Cyclocross: Soma Double Cross 46cm (the 42cm would have been better)

Companies size totally different and top tube length is usually the best way to compare different brands.  Just remember that tri bikes will have shorter top tubes as compared to road/cross bikes.

plus you never know if peope were fitted correctly for both bikes.. My first bike was a road bike where they said,  "here this will fit you "  and i didn't know any better.. my tri bike was a little longer fitting process

Agreed. I was fitted for a road bike at a reputable LBS 2 years ago and ended up with a 60cm Trek 2100. When I went to buy a tri bike this summer, the guys assumed I'd go smaller, but after a fitting, I brought me home a 60cm Felt B12. I was told I'm "leggy" (eyebrow raised...)

Thanks guys, appreciate it. WAY generally it seems that tri bikes should be a bit smaller but like bear said, no great conclusions to be had here.

Anyone own a tri bike and road bike from the same manufacturer?

Roadbike 59 Gios
Tri bike 56 Cube

With Tri-bikes the level of comfort (size of frame) is really up to you!
The deeper your position the more aerodynamics.
The big issue is that you must try the different positions to discover which one suites you.
If you 'aero" real deep that could mean that your lungcapacity is a lot less etc.

So IMHO tri bikes are a lot more "personal" roadbikes.
