At my LBS they gave me a deal on the 2009 Specialized Transition Pro for $4400. He also said he will throw in his race kit (his jersey and bib shorts) that he says retails for $400. Not only this but will also give me 15% off all the accessories I want. Would this be a great deal? I live in southern California. Thanks

jersey and bib valuing $400??? I think that's off.... and 15% off other goodies when buying a bike is kindof "standard" . It retails for $5500, so price-wise that is a good deal! I would make sure it fits and you fall in love with it and not go for it just because of the great deal.

That is a nice bike.  I saw one during my last race in Rancho Seco on July 11th.

Cervelo P2 Ultegra, with plenty left over for some used or clearance Zipps. Still less than $5K.

Best rec so far.  I almost bought a brand new 2009 P2C last year, but couldn't pass up a really good deal on 2008 Felt B2.  The Zipp wheels will get you more speed than spending another $2,000 on a more expensive frame.  I paid a little less for the B2 and bought some nice aero wheels.

some of the best bang for hte buck would be:

QR seduza, calenite or lucero, all three bikes are under 3k (2000, 2500 and 2900 respectively),
cervelo P2 (2500-3100 depending on specs)
felt b12 or similar

get a GOOD fit

then deck out with any/combination of the following:

-some good bike coaching from someone that knows what they are talking about (you will see more gains here than anywhere else)

- Aero wheels

- Aero Helmet

- Power meter.

on the wheels check into zipp flashpoints, or the HED jets, both great wheels at good prices.

Where/when can one find clearance Zipp wheels?

If you're willing to consider used bikes, that's another option.  A few months ago I got a used 2008 Felt DA with a Zipp 404 & a Hed-3 for under 4K.  A new DA is about 9K i believe.

I just bought a bike today. I asked if they had any 2009 P2 on clearance and if not please give me a call when they do. I also wanted a set of race wheels. I compromised a bit on a number of items but it was just too good a deal. This is what I got for $3500.00 after some haggling:

2009 P2

Swap out crank and BB for Ultegra (didn't like the flex of the chain rings on the stock P2)

Bontrager Aeolus 5.0 ACC race wheels (in addition to stock) that were hanging in the shop and on sale

11-25 cluster for race wheels

A set of Continental 4000, tape and tubes for race wheels

Ultegra pedals

There are usually end-of-season or winter sales here or there... Another option is to buy a used pair at the end of the season from a rental shop like racedaywheels.com...

Occasionally you'll also see a shop online that's running a "20% off everything" sale. Sometimes they exclude Zipp wheels, other times they don't.

Then, of course, there's always ebay.

if you're asking someone on a limited  budget, I'd say ANY tri bike for 5K is going to be pretty freakin' good.
I wish I had your delima.

Love to talk more, but I've go to my part-time job

My husband just surprised me with this bike :

http://www.racycles.com/store/product.aspx?catid=3%2c15%2c106&pid=89

If you fit one of the size frames that they have, it's a good deal. Its the DA without the race wheels (I already have race wheels). I should get it this week!!!! I'm riding an older Felt B2 right now.
