Hi all. I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to post. I'm 35 years old and 40-50 lbs overweight. I quit smoking a year ago today and started cycling this past spring. Now, it's time to do something about this excess weight and tri. I want to do some sprints next season. I started a nutrition and duathlon plan this week to celebrate my one year tobacco-free. I don't have pool access, yet, and I really need to work on my running. Until today, I had not run since I left the Navy 12 1/2 years ago - and today hurt.

Welcome. First off, a HUGE congrats to you for being 1 year tobacco free! That's an enormous accomplishment. Second, welcome to triathlon. I think you will find it equally addicting once you start seeing personal gains, which will be relatively quick once you get going. I remember the pain of running after not running for a looooong time. Don't worry, it definitely gets better. Enjoy.

When I have been 40lbs overweight, I started out walking briskly for an hour or more for a few weeks everyday. Then slowly moving into running. Diet is the key to losing weight & that much extra weight was too hard on my knees, calves, & feet. I've done this twice now(losing 40lbs). Gratz on being tobacco free.

Welcome to BT! Congrats on your one year smoke free! I just passed my 4yr mark on 12/26. This is the best way to keep free of that habbit..but have to say you probably won't save and $$! Although  I did buy my first bike with the money that I would have spent on smokes! And tri's are more fun!

Hey. I have never been a smoker so I don't really understand the level of addiction, but I've seen so many of my friends go through that process; ditto the other posters, you have done a really tough thing, and I'm picking that this triathlon gig will be just fine in comparison. Good work!

Welcome Sailor.  More kudos for quitting smoking!  I finally quit a few years ago and couldn't be happier.  Good luck in your training!

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement. I had a bad start, though, with an MCL strain. Doc said, "too much, too soon." So, no running for a while - he wants me to lose some of this extra weight and regain some quad strength first to help stabilize the knee. As long as I'm not having discomfort, I can get on the bike or swim (once I have pool access). For now, I'll use the bike to help get this weight off. I managed to lose 3 lbs during the 2 weeks of Christmas and New Year with just proper nutrition ( I don't use the word "diet") and started back on the bike this week.

That is awesome my friend.  I too quit smoking a little over a year ago after smoking for 20 years.  It's amazing how much different you feel after a year.  I never could have done anything I have accomplished if I was still smoking.  Congradulations on finally kicking such a hard and horrible habbit.
