This looks horrible, a 20 foot or higher wall of water sweeping through a major city and unfortunately, there's no where for people to go.

Let hope things aren't as bad as they look.

When I saw the "Breaking News" bit on Fox News, they said it was a 7-point-something, so I guess it's been upgraded.

Fox News said that there's been a tsunami warning for much of the region, including Indonesia. Best wishes for Yanti's well being.

thanks for posting and checking in, folks ... I'm good, Bali is really on the bottom of Indonesia (literally) and me and most of mine are on the protected south part of the island as well. Very worried about friends in Japan, Guam, and BTer's daughter in Saipan right now, mildly worried about friends living in the north of Indonesia. All prayers and good wishes appreciated ...

ETA: there are a bunch of BT Japan peeps and others scattered in the regions likely to be affected ... posted in our Southeast Asia forum and I hope they check in soon.

BTer's daughter (Gregkl's kid) in Saipan is fine, and it's all systems go for her and XTERRA Saipan, her first triathlon, in 12 hours. Taiwan peeps have checked in, safe and looking like they will be, too. Started a separate thread for Hawaii ...

Okinawa BT'er here.  Nothing going on here.  We expected a small tsunami here, less than 2 meters, but nothing came of it.

My wife informed me this morning when I got up and have been catching the vids and news.

The number of deaths were reported at around 50 the last time I heard and I believe will only rise.

How devastating!

Maks Tri - 2011-03-11 8:55 AM Scary video of the tsunami in Japan

That video was crazy and scary -- hard to believe it's real! I didn't watch the whole thing, but did you notice the cars driving away from the wave about 2.5 mins into the video? I hope they made it (I didn't want to watch in case they didn't).

another friend, a pilot, just checked in from Hawaii and said everything there truly is and is likely to be fine.

His work update from Japan is that there are about 300 bodies washed up in Sendai Harbor, and Tokyo city is pretty much shut down. It is the largest city in the world, btw.

Stomach-turning.

You lose sight of that particular vehicle.  Later on in the vid, the wave approaches a heavier-traveled road and there are more vehicles trying to rush through.  I didn't see any vehicle get engulfed, but the vid cuts off after 5+ minutes.  It's frightening.  I feel so sorry for those people, and there was nothing that anybody could do.

Nope. Only northern Indonesia is at risk. And if southern ever were ... well, I live on top of a mountain. We do get the brunt of horrible storms and lightning here, though.

Another friend whose plane was literally about to land in Tokyo got diverted to Sapporo. He said even the aftershocks there were brutal.

Absolutely horrible.  Fox is reporting now that some tsunami waves have hit Hawaii... not nearly as bad of course, but shows you the power of that quake.  Alaska is still on watch.
