OK, I'm ready to smack the weirdo who canned the phrase "First Night" as the replacement for "New Years Eve!" I don't know about where you live, but this is constantly rammed down our throats here. First off, it's incorrect; up until midnight tonight, it should be called "Last Night" if anything, being as how it is the last night of the year. After midnight it's officially "First Morning." If you want to use the term "First Night" then save it for Sunday night!

OK rant over....back to my 2nd cup of coffee.

And Happy New Year's Eve everyone, from your resident avuncular curmudgeon!

You might want to back away from the coffee, old guy. Don't want you to have a stroke.

I haven't heard this "First Night" thing. Is it regional, or what? Who is using it?

The first reference to it was as far as I can recall in Worcester MA, soon followed by the Boston TV stations picking up the term and using it for our capitol city's celebration. Around here, you never hear anything except "First Night" from the media. Boston even has an organization built around the stupid term!

And Haddonfield NJ is jumping on the bandwagon;

I think it's time to move south...or west...or north...somewhere.

Hmm. Never heard of it. Sounds like an attempt to commercialize, or at least trademark, New Year's Eve.

Why is it called "First" Night®?

A new year is about new beginnings. It is a time to discard the old, to forget the problems of the past, and to look ahead with hope and optimism. The name "First Night" symbolizes this forward look, over the technically correct term "Last Night".

The Name is also a symbolic reference to the opening night of artistic performances. And, because we tend to remember words that are odd combinations, the words "First Night" associated with positive feelings and memorable experiences, are unforgettable.

Each First Night® Celebration is identified by the date of the new year the event welcome. So although it will be held on December 31, 2005, this year's event is titled "First Night® 2006."

I just briefly skimmed thru the links you provided us, but it sounds to me that the only new year's celebration that should be referred to as "First Night" is the actual First Night celebration, so I think the media may be mistaken if they are just beginning to refer to New Year's Eve as First Night. A lot of cities have cultural celebrations like that, but refer to them as, say, First Friday, etc...and they occur on the first Fri of each month, etc.

Here in the D.C. area there are several towns that promote "First Night".  It is usually sponsored by several businesses in the downtown area of the town.  They really push it as a family event (no alcohol) with bands and activities for the kids.  I've never been to one but several of our friends like to go.

First Night is just a way for the city to have a semi-organized, family friendly culturally worthwhile celebration that doesn't involve getting smashed. It's actually a lot of fun. One price gets you into all kinds of different shows/activities.

And as to the millenium: it was 2000. This may be mathematically incorrect, but society has basically agreed to a cultural convention that the first century had 99 years so we can celebrate these things when 9s on the the odometer turn to 0.

Isn't "first night" another name for the medieval tradition of "droit du seignueur"?

If so, count me in.
