I know, I know, asking fellow Triathlete's if I should or shouldn't race is like asking an addict if you should take another hit....however....

I have a 2nd degree sunburn on my stomach (long story - don't ask) that required a tetnus shot and is being treated with antibiotic burn cream (I didn't say I was smart ok). I am supposed to race a sprint tri this Sat. Dr. said I would "probably" be ok to race by then but I am still very uncomfortable - was going to swim today but it was just too painful to even get suit on let alone get in the pool. Hubby is worried about it getting "really" infected in the lake on Saturday.

My A race is 2 weeks from this Sunday. I have made my decision (although could always change it!) about this weekend, just looking for confirmation that I did (or did not) make the right choice.

What say you COJ?

If your A race is in two weeks I would wait for this to heal and not risk making it worse. With that said, if this was your A race then I'd say do it.

Don't race, take the time off and heal.

Wow, you're a glutton. Posting a tri-talk topic in COJ...doesn't happen all that much.

Don't race. Your skin and health are forever, this is a tune-up.

Don't race, sunburns can take a while to heal and your skin will be more tender than you think, save it for your A race! (but you could still go this saturday and cheer everyone else on, right?)

Wow, you sound so much like me. Several years back I had a serious bout of lower back spasms. However my A race was coming up and I wanted to keep my training loss as minimal as possible, so on the bike I got and headed out for a 45k ride, regardless of the pain.
To show how stupid this was, I needed to stop every 5k or so to let the spasms subside enough to continue on. I doubt there was much training benefit to that ride.
In hind sight, very stupid.

Now that I am older and somewhat more sensible, my advice is DO NOT RACE! Allow the healing process so that you can perform for your A race.

Agree with everyone who says don't race! That sounds painful and really not worth the risk of infection. Best wishes for quick healing.

I am on the "don't race" side. I would risk slowing down your recovery for one tune up race.

I'm still trying to figure out how a sunburn required a tetanus shot since C. tetani is an obligate anaerobe, but yeah sit this one out and let it heal.

Dont race but go volunteer at it if its close, you can still learn things by watching others race as well.

I think it was a plot by the Dr to make my arm hurt so much that I forgot how much my stomach hurt!

She said for bad burns should have tentus - hadn't had one since? so I took it

Much better today but still sore - thinking "maybe" better but you are all right - there will be other tri's A in 2 weeks and it's just not worth the risk!

An open skin wound of that size is a magnet for a bacterial infection. Stay out of open water until it heals.

I've had large area burns (actually frostbite caused by extreme stupidity) and know how you're feeling.

There was a method to my madness - you see Tri- talk would get me all the tri "junkies" who would say race! and race more. COJ is where my wise and learned friends are who I know would speak me the truth not what "they" would want to hear !

Picked up race packet and turned in my timing chip - weather turned crappy too - raining all day today (we needed it) but lake is probably more churned up than usual before the race....Now to heal for that A race in 2 weeks!
