Subject: Canadian Iron Distance In Ottawa
Hey anyone going out to the Somersault event called the Canadian Iron Distance in September?

The race is very flat and fast, lot's of loops, great people, awesome organizer etc...

Great race for the amount paid...

Chris

I'm hoping to do the 1/2 IM in Ottawa provided things go well and my body behaves.

Chris, I did the Canadian HIM here in Ottawa this past September and plan on doing the IM this year.  The race is relatively flat and fast and it IS fun.  It is very well organized and well worth entering.  See you there in September ...

I'm likely going to do the sprint race they hold at the event. I'm training for Olympic distance this year, but they only do sprint, 1/2 IM and IM at this race. If I get really ambitious I might up the training for the 1/2 IM, but not likely.

This will be a 'for fun' effort for me. I agree the price is right !

Apparently, according to my coach, it is a good race. I'm preparing for IM FLorida on November 3rd, so I'm doing the Iron shop-dance event to prepare. It'll really help get some confidence into my race prep.

Anyone got suggestions for a hotel. My wife and 2 and half year old daughter will be joining me as well so it needs to be decent, relatively close to the race and if possible close to restaurants, shops, etc.

Any suggetions?

The race is held at Mooney's Bay, which doesn't have much around it in the way of shopping, restaurants, or hotels. My best suggestion would be to stay in the Byward Market area, that way there is lots available, and you are close to the north end of the bike route - about a 10 km trip straight down Colonel By Drive to Mooney's Bay.

There are lots of hotels in the Market area. The Westin is right on Colonel By, but is probably pricey. I can also think of the Novotel and a Holiday Inn in the Market area, although I'm sure there are some others.

Another option would be to stay at one of the B&B's along Echo Drive. Echo parallels Colonel By, so you would be staying right on the race course and be only a short trip to the Market area.

If I can give any more details, please feel free to PM me.

Excellent info. Thanks. I like the Byward Market area as does my wife so that sounds perfect!

Try Les Suites (1-800-267-1989 or page one of attached) or Novotel (1-800-668-6835 or page 2 of attached), on Nicholas street in Ottawa.  They are just a block from Colonel By, which runs along the Rideau Canal all the way to Mooney's Bay (about 8kms or so).   http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g155004-Ottawa_Ontario-Hotels.html

Also, there are a lot of B&B places in Ottawa at http://www.bedsandbreakfasts.ca/ottawa.htm

Resurected.

Signed up for the HIM today. Also, change of plans. My wife and daughter aren't coming with me but a buddy who's going to do the Try-a-tri will be. The event hotel is the Chimo across from the St. Lawrence Centre. I've read mixed reviews (some quite bad) and I'm wondering if anyone on here has any experience with this hotel. Granted, we're only staying one night but I don't want to sleep in filth.

I don't know much about the hotel other than that they sponsor lots of events to draw people to it.  It is kind of out in the 'burbs (not that far out, but certainly not downtown) across the street from a very big shopping mall.  Not the best area if you want to enjoy Ottawa pre or post race.  YMMV.
