Worm attacked voter database in notorious Florida district
Machine in hotly contested FL-13 lain low on first day of election by Slammer

May 16, 2007 (Computerworld) -- Sarasota County, Florida's computer database infrastructure was attacked by a notorious Internet worm on the first day of early voting during the 2006 election featuring the now-contested U.S. House race in Florida's 13th Congressional district between Christine Jennings (D) and Vern Buchanan (R).

In the early afternoon hours on Monday, October 23, 2006, an Internet worm slammed into the county's database system, breaching its firewall and overwriting the system's administrative password. The havoc brought the county's network, and the electronic voting system which relies on it, to its knees as Internet access was all but lost at voting locations for two hours that afternoon. Voters in one of the nation's most hotly contested Congressional elections were unable to cast ballots during the outage as officials were unable to verify registration data.

Renee - this thread would probably generate more interest if you re-post it with the word "pornography" in the title.

Yet another reason why e-voting is such a struggle.

Considering the complete lack of due diligence in terms of security these companies seem to follow, I would be hardly enthusiastic about those things.

The fact that they got smacked with something that was that old is rather disturbing.

Didn't Stalin say something like "those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything."? So maybe those that monkey with the voting really deiced everything.

At least it's a hard copy with a paper trail! Better than etherware or PacMan vulnerable vote casting.

I know some places are demanding an auditable paper trail for voting machines.  However, some of the manufacturers have been slow to adopt that standard.  Plus, that can create other issues, as well.

Not necessarily arguing for or against one side, just pointing out random facts related to the issue.

You know I don't mind that it is electronic as far as voting is concerned. But, to not have a backup method on site in the event of such and issue is ludicrous.  That is terrible that some were not able to vote.

here's a great video made by some IT researchers at princeton showing just how easily a diebold machine can be hacked to change the vote.

http://itpolicy.princeton.edu/voting/

oregon has a vote-by-mail system. they have anti-fraud procedures in place, there is a papertrail, no security problems like with diebold machines, turnout rates are high, it costs less, and there are no long lines to stand in on election day.
