Extreme Veteran  365   Winnipegosis |  Subject: Another New GuyHello, folks. I ran a sprint distance triathalon about 7 years ago, and haven't done anything triathalon-y since. I've recently taken up running, and am up to about 14 miles on my long runs. Cycling has never really been much of a problem for me, but my old arch-nemesis the water has always fought me. I never really learned how to swim properly, and just sort of thrash around in the water to get to where I'm going. I've decided to learn how to swim (properly) and try another sprint or maybe olympic distance triathalon or two this summer. This place looks like a great resource for a guy like me just trying to get back into things. Just wanted to tip my hat and say howdy. |

I've never read this book, but many people on this board have been recommending Total Immersion for swimming. Other things you can try is see if there's a master's swim program in your area to give your swimming a kick start. Meantime, have you thought about duathlons until the swimming comes along? Sharon |

Sharon I've seen that book pushed on quite a few postings. I just might have to give it a read. Unfortunately, there's no master's swim program or ANY swim program in my town, but I'm currently investigating what's available in the nearest city. Duathalon might be an interesting alternative until I get my swimming down, but not to worry, I'll keep that low-key! ;-) Cheers! |

Iowa | Subject: RE: Another New Guy Hey Grant - Welcome - especially to a fellow "water thrasher" - I have done recreational swimming with some comfort - but joined the TI crowd - got the book and video and am doing the begining drills. I really recommend the book - the video will help a lot too. I'm following the advice of forgetting what I knew, patiently following the drills and it began to "click" today. (A couple of days ago, I drank lots of clorine cocktails - though briefly about du-ing - but then here we're "gonnabes!) With that great running base, you could easily go into maintainance and spend time on the swim. |

Regarding Total Immersion: take a look at their web site, for a taste of what they offer. I haven't bought the book yet, but just the info on the site has really helped my swimming. There is a lot of good info there. Look at the free stuff area. Lot's of drills and such to help with technique and downloadable video clips. Also check out the monthly online magazine and the forums for info. Here's the link: |

Veteran 319 Illinois | Subject: RE: Another New Guy Welcome Shrike... or shall i say welcome back to triathlons! wow- looking at the bike and the run- i'd say you're almost ready for a 1/2 IM. AH YES, the water.... seeing as i too first learned how to freestyle swim when i decided to do a triathlon [at the ripe old age of 24'ish], I know the difficulty of facing this archnemesis. My suggestion, so that you do learn proper stroke/style is to take a class. If possible, join a masters program.... it sounds intimidating, but when i decided to join they divided the 'team' by levels from 6 [near perfect] on down. Good luck to you, remember to breath in through your mouth when it's OUT of the water [i went through tons of choking sessions]. Milly |

Milly Excellent advice! I shall give it my all!  As far as 1/2 IMs are concerned, I think i'd probably drown before I ever got to the bike and run. I'm thinking Sprint to start, then taking it from there, although I wouldn't mind if there was a longer run and ride coupled with a shorter swim. I haven't really investigated too much what's offered around me. I guess that should be my next step. |
