Subject: Guy "injury" question
While trying not to be too graphic I want to get some advice on how to keep training the next 2.5 weeks without taking too many days off. Been running more the last couple of weeks and during my run on Saturday I started to feel some "discomfort" around the most sensitve of areas. When I got home and cooled down I had forgotten about it but when I went #1 I felt an pretty intense burning. Looked down and there was a some blood! After I calmed myself down I realized it was from the outside so wasn't worried anymore but I now have a sensivte abrasion that hurts when I walk. Is there anything I can do for this? I'm cringing at the thought of a band aid. Figured I might try body glide but don't know if that will be enough. Any advice?

Do whatever is necessary to keep the wound clean.  You don't want an infection there!

You could try second skin or liquid bandage or something similar, just know that the alcohol in it will burn like crazy for a few seconds.

you may want to get some kind of antibacterial ointment. it's a world of bacteria down there. and apply accordingly.

Jeez, wasn't even thinking along those lines. Thanks for the heads up. I'll stop on the way to work tomorrow.

You can also try some aquaphor when its race time. It will be easier to put on the area than bodyglide, and it works well as a waterproofer/skin protectant.

Another vote for Aquaphor. Protect it during the day while it heals and as a preventative for next time.

Anti-bacterial cream -- yes.  For prevention, Bodyglide works, but hard to apply.  Bike lotion (like Chamois Butt'r) is much easier to apply and also works.  But you probably need to heal up a bit first.  It shouldn't take long.

Ouchie. Had a similair situation with a little shafting on the "boys" during my first IM. Wow, talk about your intense pain. Perhaps I was lucky in that it healed real fast. I mean it hurt bad, no blood by like a serious rug burn. Wow, did it hurt. Like I said, it healed quick.

I suppose just like a leg injury, stay off it, and um, raise it above your heart......

I have a few pairs of running shorts that are now for playing in the yard with the kids and such as they didn't hold the "fort" down well enough and I get too much "incidental" contact.

I like the boys to be held with minimal movement, maybe your running shorts aren't being supportive enough.

Good luck.

Yeah, thought of that. Went out and got 2 new pairs so hopefully that will help for the future.

Just make sure that they are actual running shorts with a smooth liner in them. Some shorts with liners in them have more of a mesh fabric...not good on anything down there!

Best answer yet :D

If you have kids at home, diaper rash cream is perfect. I used to keep some in the house even before we had kids to help alleviate saddle sores and monkey butt (too much time spent in wet riding shorts). It doesn't keep you from getting irritation like chamois cream, but does wonders in getting rid of it.

I have real short lycra shorts I wear under my running shorts. Nothing moves or rubs that shouldn't. If it's a real long run I add good old vaseline.

Been there. Good news is it heals quickly, maybe a day or two and most of the discomfort will be gone.  x2 on what others have said regarding anti-bacterial (neosporin) and support.

No matter what, do not EVER put a band aid on it.
