Ok here is a bone to throw out for discussion....

I was on my way to work today and heard a song on the radio that practically transported me back to the desert. I mean I could even smell that desert smell (for those who have been there you know what I mean). That has never happened to me before....I have had certain songs that make you think of a specific person or time, but never one that evokes such a real memory. I don't remember the 3-4 minutes that went by while that song was on. Weird huh?
I was just curious if this had happend to anyone else?

Paradise by the Dashboard Light (Meatloaf), Piano Man (Billy Joel), I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) can transport me back to high school in a flash, especially my freezing swim practices, chlorine, wet hair.

The Cure (Why Can't I Be You/Friday I'm In Love) reminds me of dancing with my husband at the London Victory Club. I couldn't listen to Pictures of You for several years after we separated.

Put Your Lights On (Everclear/Santana) puts me back in a very specific, very bad place.

Fisherman's Blues (Waterboys) reminds me of hope, crawling out of that bad place.

TMI - that's me!

Yep. Music is a big trigger for me, as are smells. Some things that I thought I'd forgotten can be triggered by the right song, or the right smell. Doesn't happen too often but when it does, it kinda takes me aback.

Several years ago I was unhappy with my job & location and interviewing for a new job in Eugene, Oregon. The location was very appealing, but the job was not quite what I was looking for. After the interview, I drove through the forest to the beach to ponder. "Silent Lucidity" by Queesryche was playing on the radio. I know that it was only a short song, but in my memory, it seems to last for the whole duration of the drive. I parked at the beach and watched seals & surfers bobbing in the waves for a while, then drove back to town. I decided that, although I was looking for a change, this was not the right opportunity. Whenever I hear that song, it takes me back to that time and place.

American Pie reminds me of when my family was departing Republic of Panama (dad drove us all the way to Ohio); I still remember pulling out of the driveway and hearing the song. It was followed Sealed With A Kiss by Bobby Vinton.

Suzanne, by Leonard Cohen puts me in a lake, underwater, frantically searching for a dead man. But I still like the song.

Don't we all have that first love that still oddly enough has a special place in our hearts? This song punches me in the nutz every time.

GARTH BROOKS
"What She's Doing Now"

Last time I saw her it was turnin' colder
But that was years ago
Last I heard she had moved to Boulder
But where she's now I don't know
But there's somethin' 'bout this time of year
That spins my head around
Takes me back makes me wonder
What she's doin' now

'Cause what she's doin' now is tearin' me apart
Fillin' up my mind and emptyin' my heart
I can hear her call each time the cold wind blows
And I wonder if she knows...what she's doin' now

Just for laughs I dialed her old number
But no one knew her name
Hung up the phone sat there and wondered
If she'd ever done the same
I took a walk in the evenin' wind
To clear my head somehow
But tonight I lie here thinkin'
What she doin' now

'Cause what she's doin' now is tearin' me apart
Fillin' up my mind and emptying my heart
I can hear her call each time the cold wind blows
And I wonder if she knows

What she's doin' now is tearin' me apart
Fillin' up my mind and emptying my heart
I can hear her call each time the cold wind blows
And I wonder if she knows...what she's doin' now

I am a bit embarrassed to admit what song it was that I was listening too. It was Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home"....on of my friends had that CD in Kuwait and somehow I ended up with it....Now everytime I hear a song from that CD it makes me return to the desert.

I love that CD, actually...but the first time I listened to it I was on a business trip in a town I'd never been to. And I got food poisoning (a very bad bout of it). So when I hear any song off that album, I have to fight off a horrible nauseated feeling, which is a shame, because I really like that album.

Shawn Colvin is funny in the flashback-triggering department. Whenever I hear "Polaroids" I'm 16, sitting in my computer chair, feet up on my bed, window open, at 8:00am skipping class to study for a big biology test and eating sausage&cheese balls made by my roommate's mom.

I saw The Waterboys in Atlanta a few years ago. It was a treat. Think I'll cue up the song now... My exBF used to play/sing the song to me (he was a part-time musician).

I love "A Man Is In Love" and "Love Anyway."

"Stairway to Heaven" - the initial chords and I am suddenly 14 years old, in a dark gym, dancing to the longest song on earth and always with the WRONG  guy!

"A your adorable, B your so beautiful..." and I am 8 years old sitting in the back seat of a stationwagon with all my siblings while dad is singing (and whistling in all the places he can't remember the words

Songs and smells - instant time travel.

How about The Replacements?

We saw the Waterboys in Atlanta, too, but it was quite a few years ago.
