I'll start:
The Clash
REM
Elvis Costello
Any pop star
Lynyrd Skynard
Matchbox 20
Bob Dylan

Then again, I'm a prog-hard-metal-rock, musician based snob. If it doesn't have odd time signatures- I'm out.

Vocals are strictly optional and lyrics are of the least importance. Again, vocals are strictly optional and lyrics are of the least importance.

I don't look to musicians or song lyracists (sp?) for ...decent writing. That's what writers are for.

However, there are plenty of popular (cool-to-like) bands I do enjoy. I'm not one of those record store dudes who loves every band you have never heard of - and once more than 13 people begin to like said band, the said band is instantly labled a "sell out". I knew plenty of those cats in college and they drove me nuts.

Any rapper who brags constantly about money and cars...so most of them.
Crosby Stiles and Nash (got taken to a concert on my 21st birthday...didn't have a drink the whole night, maybe thats why I hate them so..)

Oh, I guess theree are a few:

White Stripes
Modest Mouse

WS just sounds way to contrived to be a good garage band. Jack White spends way too much time Channeling Jimmy Page for my tastes. The music is just rangity pangity without a lot of real substance. (Anyone getting sick of hearing Icky Thump Yet?)

I should really like Modest Mouse. Johnny Marr is the coolest and this band definitely has a great unique sound. It's just that most of their recent music does no do anything for me. I sorta liked some of the early stuff (Pre- Johnny Marr) but the attraction ends there.

Love Johny Marr! The most underrated guitarist out there - all because he doesn't "solo". I used to hate The Smiths when I first heard them - scratch that - I loved the music I couldn't get past Morriseys self-pittying whines. But he grew on me and I became a huge fan. Ever listened to the Seven Worlds Collide stuff? - pretty cool. Hate to admit it but I'm not familiar with MM - I'll have to check them out.

Edit: Ok just checked them out and my first thought: can't get past the vocalist. He sounds like Robert Smith meets Joe Strummer meets Andy Partridge. Trying waaaay to hard too sound English!! Too forced.

Yup, that about says it all for Modest Mouse

I really liked the few tracks that Johnny Marr did with The The (Matt Johnson) back in the late 80s. Definitely some cool stuff. Just way obscure...
