Anybody know much about the quality of this race, the courses, the awards? I gotta get my mind off of not competing this weekend.

Thanks

Hi, my husband and i did this race earlier in the year. It is a good but small race. The lake is really a pond and can be pretty gross. The bike course is flat and fast! And the run is 2 loops around the "lake". It was a fun race and pretty well organized. My husband and I and another tri-clubber all placed in our catergories. So that was great.

The race director is interesting to say the elast. It seems this event is getting more popular too.

I can't comment on the RD as I don't know the person...as far as the L. Scott Stell lake, it is not too bad. I've been out there numerous times. Never seen much in the way of grass, moss, etc growing in/on the water. Talked with a guy who did it last year, he said the water was fine. It apparently is shallow enough that some were swim-walking rather than just swimming. Others I talked to said it's a good race though they didn't go into details about the water....I will be racing that day if I can line up babysitters.....

If you are looking to stay as close as possible to where the tri is held, then do internet search for "savannah gateway hotels". The gateway section is probably no more than 5 minutes maybe 10 with traffic to the park.
There are several in the $60 to $80 range (per internet ads)

If you are coming for the weekend and want to be closer to downtown but not forever away from the tri, look up "midtown hotels". There are 3 distinct sections to Savannah: Downtown, Midtown, and Southside. The tri is outside city limits on the South end of town. From the midtown hotels, it is probably 25 min to the tri....If there is anything else, let me know.

Scott

This is a fast course, and would be an instant sprint PR, but the bike course is long.  The race director is a good guy, an yes, very interesting. He is Czech (I think) and his pre race instructions are a little tough to understand through his portable P/A. His brother or cousin is the videographer and DJ and spins techno at the finish line (it was a little comedic, but I am easy to amuse). The race is well organized, the lake is fine (although there is a sign that says No Swimming). Bike is fast with few turns.

I would do this race again.

I am doingthis race as well, and am looking forward to it. I do have one question. With it being georgia and all do you think it will be cold enough to wear a wetsuit? I did rent one am very curious to try it and see if I like it, but am hesitant to wear it there due to the (What the heck is this guy doing factor). I do know it is cool in the mornings and just wondering what any one thought. Other than that I am looking forward to th erace and look forward to seeing everyone out there.

Sounds like it should be a wetsuit legal race, here's text actually from the race site:

Wetsuit legal race if water not greater than 84F. We expect water temperature around between 72-76F It will be WETSUIT legal RACE, it is not mandatory to wear weatsuit

I think my question would be do you really want to take the time to deal w/the wetsuit for such a short distance race?

I've signed up, but have never done this race before.  I drove the course when I was in Savannah last week on business. Its  FLAT, rural, very quiet course.  Should be minimal traffic on the bike.

I did this race last year and the one in June. Its a newer race, just started last year usualy about 200 people. The water isn't bad at all, just be careful getting in and out of the water its a steep bank and slippery. They had great music and lots of good post race food and as for the guy that puts on the race, his name is Radek Parnika and he is a pro triathlete and stupid fast swimmer. He wins every local sprint he enters around here, nice guy to.

There is a short video on you tube if you look up Savannah sprint triathlon, it will give you a good look at the course!!

Fun race, easy course.  While the RD couldn't control the soggy mud pit conditions, it was a bit disorganized & poorly executed event.  I'm sure its a work in progress.  It was a big of a gagger to see the dead duck floating at the swim start.  Money mouth  I'm sure I'll be back next season.

and it seems like the comments section was disabled.

reminds me of the old joke:

vicar goes into a posh hotel and asks the person at the desk. "i hope the porn channel is disabled". to which the person replies, "are you off your rocker?, the porn channel is the regular kind..."
