Subject: The joy and agony of my first ride on my road bike.
Just wanted to let everyone know of my progress so far.

Anyways, my wife is very supportive of what I am wanting to accomplish in my goal of doing a triathlon. My wife bought a road bike for father's day. I thought that it was very thoughtful of her.
You should have seen her face when I told her I wanted to buy a $5,000.00 triathlon bike. Of course I really just needed a starter bike and not a fancy bike. I need to find out if I can make it in this sport and continue to live this lifestyle before dropping some serious money on gear.

So I get my new road bike from Amazon and I put it together. I am as excited as can be about my bike and take it for a spin on the road outside of my house. The road is flat and the bike appears to be scary fast and I like it. I love it!!!

Since I lift weights 3 days a week and run the other 3 days, I think I am in decent shape. So I decide that on Saturday that I am going to ride from my house to my in-laws house. This is approx. 12 miles away. This is my first long distance ride on my road bike. Now I am assigned to the Bike Patrol Unit with the Police Dept. that I work at. That job duty consists of me riding about a mile and then resting and then riding a little bit more and then patrolling in my car and then ride my bike a little more. What I am getting at is I thought I was in shape enough for my first long ride.

I live in Mississippi and it gets kind of hot in the summer time. So I leave the house on my bike around lunch and it is approx. 95 degrees, no wind and no clouds. So I am moving right along and come to my first hill and have gone approx. 1 mile. I shift the gears so that it is easier for my to go up the hill. I come down on the other side and shift again and the chain pops off because I shifted to fast. So I get off the bike and put the chain back on. I am still motivated at this point and having fun.

Once I hit the 4 mile mark, my back it starting to hurt a little and my hands are starting to go a little numb. Still motivated, especially when my wife and my son drive by and waive and honk their horn for encouragement. They even stayed with me in their vehicle to pace me so that we could have our own little Tour De Mississippi.

Then about the 6 mile mark I hit my first major hill and it is starting to get a little hot and I am breathing heavy a little. But I make it to the top and then coast down the other side. That felt so good!!! Only to have the feeling wiped away at the sight of another major hill. I am starting to get that feeling that I am not as in as good a shape as I thought.

As I peddle up the steep and to long of a hill or mountain, not sure I can tell the difference anymore. I didn't realize there were mountains in mississippi, and riding this bike really sucks!!! But then I make it to the other side and get to coast again and I just love riding my new bike.

So I have this feeling inside me of joy and agony for the next 4 miles until the last 2 miles are all down hill. I love riding my bike. My family was there to cheer my on when I made it to the in-laws house.

My wife told my that when she saw me peddling up a hill, she told my son that I was probably saying, "Oh crap!" My said that my son said that I was probably saying a bad word instead of oh crap. Kids can be so funny sometimes.

Anyways, in the end I actually enjoyed most of the ride and can't wait to do another ride. My first bike ride actually put me in my place and made me realize that I have still got a long ways to go in my training.

So I made the 12 mile trip in approx. 50 minutes.

Sorry for getting so long winded, I just felt the need to share.

Congrats on your first long ride, I notice the hills/ mountains always seem so much smaller in your car than they do when you pedaling up them. Keep it up and your on your way to your first century!Smile

The first ride of many.

Some of the pain in your hands and back may be from an improper fit on the bike.  If possible, taking the bike to a local bike shop for a professional fit will likely pay off quite a bit in the long run.

They can probably also look at your front derailleur to make sure you do not drop the chain again.

Great job on your first ride and don't worry about the hills they get us all. One of my rides includes a trip over the Kemah Bridge and just about blow up every time...... I'm still working on that one.

Hills in Hernando, huh?!?!  I grew up in Southaven, so I'm going to giggle a little here

Congrats on your first long ride...keep at it.  I agree with the poster above.  With a proper bike fit, you will eliminate most of your aches and pains on the bike.

Ok so the hills in Hernando might actually be steep mounds. They still suck going up and are even funner going down. I came to realize that even though I enjoyed going down the hills, it just ment that I was going to have to peddle back up some where.

I probably need take the bike to a pro shop and get fitted or I can just put a motor on the
bike. Laughing Just kidding!!!

I probably have the same bike - Amazon, Target whatever - I took it to the LBS and they fixed me up - no more chains coming off, wheels trued up etc etc,  Made some seat adjustments and all the hand, neck and shoulder pain went away.

Schwinn prelude -- So your components are a little better but the LBS had to tighten ALL my spokes to get the wheels straight, they were very loose.  The guy asked me "Did you ride this yet?"  I sain no and he said good thing you could have folded this front wheel in half.  But now I am tuned and ridin smooth - shifts good and worked it out hard this weekend and it responded well.

Good Luck

This is approx. 12 miles away. This is my first long distance ride on my road bike.

Save that quote and look at it again in a few months. You're going to laugh.

+1 on saving the quote! about a month ago I did my first century ride - 18mths since I got my old mountain bike out and rode 3kms round the block and my wife called an ambulance because I was so out of breath she thought I'd had a heart attack.

I spent FIVE hours in the ER because they thought I'd had a motorbike accident instead of just being a silly fat bastard who rode too far on my 200$ mountain bike.  I am lying there enjoying the oxygen and they say "time to go for CT Scan now" - Thatis when I got scared - Im thinking - jeez man how can breathing hard mean i need a brain scan ARGGHGHHH

Oh yes its funny now...... real funny!.

Thank you for the early morning laugh. It kind of sounded like my ride the other night... far from my first ride, but it was a hellacious hilly route.

That is indeed a funny story, but it's also a great example of why you should get checked out by your doctor first if you're older or have preexisting medical conditions and are about to either start a brand new serious training program or are about to ramp up your training significantly. It's worth the inconvenience for the peace of mind.

Thanks for sharing that - good write-up!  Good to have the wife/family support behind you!  Tri training can be lonely at times so having moral support is important.

PS. You never really take note of hills on roads until you start to ride bikes.  Then you notice them all!

You would think central MS would be flat too...nope.  My grandmother lives in Calhoun City and we rode about 20 miles down that way a few weeks ago.  I always thought it was flat down there until the ride.

Very cool calbears28!

6/15/01, that's the date I bought my Trek 4500 MTB.  Rode to work a week or so after that for the 1st time, 9.0 miles.  I vividly remember how tired I was that day at work and then had to ride back home.  That ride home was sooo hard even with a nice sea-breeze tailwind most of the way!  Had to twice cross a Causeway (bridge) over the intra-coastal waterway, 1/4 mile up at 4.5% grade, ugh!  Today I motor up it with ease, even after 24 miles of hard Olympic bike course riding.  Stick with it, you'll earn that $5k tribike!
