Subject: Reccs for 2010 tri season schedule?
Hi all,

New guy on the scene here, and I'm hoping to get your help.  I decided to ask this now since we are in the middle of the season...

I've been a distance runner and biker for quite a while now, I recently decided recently that my next big step will be triathlons.  Before I decided this, my goal this year was to BQ at the TCM, so that still remains my primary focus for the '09 season.  I haven't yet done any tri's, and was planning for the St Paul sprint in Aug, but now am going to sub in on a friend's Ragnar team (both same weekend), so the tri may or may not happen.  If not, no biggee.

But I digress... I'm in the process now of slowly accumulating good tri gear (all that is going well), and I will get on a good training program over the fall and winter so I can hit the 2010 tri season full-steam.
I'm planning to go watch the '09 IMoo and then register for 2010.  I have no doubt I can be ready for it, but I want to be smart getting prepared (of course!). So...

Can you please recommend a good schedule of local races for the 2010 season?  I know the schedules aren't all "out" yet, but I'm looking for some help with a solid overall plan for an early start on the sprint-oly-half progression.  I know "some local races are better than others", but don't have the experience or details to know what is what.  I'm willing to travel (meaning overnight) within reason, but sheesh - this tri stuff is expensive !!!  If the race is worth it (well organized, good course, etc), then I'll certainly travel, so all suggestions are certainly welcome!!!

I live in south Minneapolis by Nokomis, FWIW.

Thanks in advance for your help - BT has been an amazing resource, and I'm thankful to have discovered it!

Cheers, Chris

All sorts of options for you, and plenty of quality races to choose from. Obviously your goal race is IMMOO and the season should revolve around that. You probably can't go wrong with something like a Buffalo Olympic -> Chisago HIM -> IMMOO core race schedule, with a sprint or two sprinkled in and maybe an early season half mary (or Boston, of course!). Take a look at mndiver's (Bryan) race schedule as a decent example.

Best of luck at TCM! You're already way more studly than most of us. On second thought, maybe Birkierunner is a better one to emulate with what you have for skills already.

I agree with the other that Buffalo and Chisago would work well.  I did Chisago as a training race leading up to IMWI in '07 and it was perfect timing.  However, I did it as a training weekend and not a race.  I swam 1.2 on Friday evening, did 13.1 including a race on Saturday morning (race was 11 miles) and then rode 56 right after the race.  The 1/2 at Chisago on Sunday went very smooth and that was when I knew I was on track for a good IM in Madison.  I would highly recommend something similar.

One race you will probably not see me ever skip unless I absolutely had to would be Heart of the Lakes.  Just a great race all around.  If IMMOO is your main focus I would say Chisago Half is about in the best spot on the calendar for you.  A lot of people like Pigman half in Iowa but that date is getting pretty close to MOO and it is about a 5 hour drive.  If getting into IM for 2010 is a priority you should really think about coming down to volunteer at this years event.  You will love the atmosphere and get a good idea of the venue.  Plus you are then gauranteed to get in.  It sells out very quickly online and many don't get in.

Thanks all! That sounds like a great plan - I watched Buffalo this year, and figured that would be a good starting point, so it's good to hear that reinforced. I'll definitely plan on the suggested schedule.mndiver - I hadn't even considered volunteering at IMWI, and that is a fabulous idea - I will definitely check that out! Thanks for the pointer with that, I can't believe didn't think of that as an option earlier. Heck, if I'm going to be there and not racing, it just makes good sense to be of service as a volunteer! Thanks again to everyone - much appreciated!Cheers, Chris

Done & done - registered for some volunteer work at IMoo...

mndiver - forgot to mention that your race summaries are great - thank you! Definitely helpful info...

I've seen some postings around to avoid Midwest Events -sponsored races -- can anyone elaborate on that?

As suggested, I'd like to sprinkle in some mid-season sprints to help hone transition skills in a race environment, and I know there are many to choose from. I'm sure some are better than others - if y'all have some favorites, I'm all ears!

Thanks again!  Cheers, Chris

EDIT: Fixed annoying missing line breaks - apparently, BT forums don't like Safari 4

You are thinking specifically of the races run by Vacation Sports (Randy Fulton RD). I think they are connected to Midwest Events somehow. You'll see some negative stuff about his races - in my opinion it is all about what to expect. His races will never be accused of being the most organized. Distances are often more of an approximation than an actual fact. However, they are generally inexpensive (he usually runs a half-off special if you sign up before Jan 1) and the people are still great. I think he has a policy of giving you a free entry at another race if you volunteer at one. I'll generally do one or two of his races per year, and really have no major complaints. Probably not a good idea to plan an A race around him, but your A race is already set, and as races to go do for the sake of doing races, I don't see any real issue.

Midwest Events is just an event listing web site, which was purchased this year by the guy who manages races for Vacation Sports.  So the real key is to look at the races on the Vacation Sports web sites.

Now, the only one of them I might recommend is the Oakdale Duathlon.  It's one of few multisport options early in the season and a lot of the big dogs will be there.  For me, it's a nice kick in the pants to get moving early in the season.  If they have their usual December sale, it's dirt cheap.

However, the St. Paul triathlon, Square Lake, etc are troublesome in ways.  Look here for their list: http://www.vacationsports.com/events.html    If you do do the St Paul tri this year, just don't think that is how a race should/will go.  It's an anomoly of a less than great course, very loose management, etc.    I wouldnt want you to be discouraged by it.

One other event I would recommend is the Ironman bike ride in April.  The weather has been bad for two years now, so it ought to be good next year   I found it a great way to get myself motivated to bike early in the season.  With the distances you're planning for next summer, you'll need that.  http://www.ironmanbikeride.org/

Good luck!  Keep in touch with any questions.

Thanks JB & BG - your feedback on Vaca Sports is what I figured the story was.  The prices are nice, but that itself made me wonder how good the organization, support, etc would be.

Definitely agree that I wouldn't ever plan one for an A race, but they seem to have nice potential as cheap & simple race-maintenance races, if that makes sense.

I don't necessarily mind looser and lax organization and all that for races  but for tri or du, I would be concerned about transition area security in particular - are the Vaca Sports races OK with regard to that?  For the price, I'll tolerate other clown-show issues as long as they're not ridiculous...

If I end up doing the St Paul tri, I was prepared for it to be pretty low-budget, so no worries there   I watched a good friend do Buffalo this year, and that certainly appeared to be impressively done.  Plus, I'll get to see IMWI first-hand when I go in Sept, so that'll be an eye-opener in many ways!

BG - good call on the duathlons and Ironman bike - I'll keep those on the radar too!

Thanks again!  Chris

Any of the Midwest MultiSport Series races is excellent.

Hey Chris - one super annoying thing about St. Paul tri (and I assume this is a Vac Sports problem in general) is the transition area.  There didn't appear to be any security and people were allowed to go in and hang around without any supervision once they were done.  I was finishing up a very slow Oly race and had to contend with racers packing up, with their entourage, as I ducked around them to head out for my run.  The other unforgiveable oversight - they ran out of water!  Do you think a race in August probably demands a good water supply?  Yes, I think so.

Emily - good words, thanks!  That's what I feared - I recently got a nice tri bike, and while I sincerely don't think I'm overly paranoid about it's security, hearing what you said does concern me.  I know there's always a risk of shenanigans in any transition area, but that sounds pretty bad.

If I end up having the energy for this race after Ragnar, I think I'll do an early drive-by and see what kind of warm-fuzzy I get.  That would be classic to have my new bike thiefed at my first tri, and then I'd be kicking myself ("You were warned!"), LOL  And the "no water" thing is another unsat - that's just no good at all...

Well, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, but I very much appreciate the insight of your experience - thank you!

Cheers, Chris

No great advice on a schedule from me - I'm in my third season, but I've only done 4 tris in my life. Two of those, however, have been the St. Paul tri - I did the sprint in '06 and the oly in '07 (new baby in '08!).

I thought it was a fun race, and although the organization isn't super slick, it was just fine for me. One big plus, though, is that it has a closed bike course! I thought that was pretty awesome, especially since I was a VERY novice cyclist when I did it as my first tri ever in '06.

Good luck to you! It sounds like you're really set up for an awesome debut.

I've gotta plug our local tri in Rochester.  It's part of the week long RochesterFest celebration and has been the last weekend in June the last 2 years.  Both a sprint/oly are available.  Very well run, nice venue, USAT sanctioned.

Thanks, Mike - good call. Glad you mentioned it - I've heard good things about that race, so I'll definitely keep that in the plan mix, too!

Switching gears... In all fairness to the St Paul Tri, I'm still planning to go (if I have any juice left after Ragnar!) and at least check it out - based on some of the feedback, it certainly sounds like it has great potential as a very laid-back first-timer tri. Though I'm a tri virgin, I can tell pretty quickly how good I feel about a given race's organization, so if it just doesn't look, smell, or feel "right" when I get there, I can always turn around and go brick from the homestead   Thanks again to all!

Cheers, Chris

First off, WELCOME   Be sure to check out the Minnesota Tri News blog for in depth coverage of local races and race schedules

Already some good suggestions above.  By checking out this year's lineup of the Midwest Multisport Series and the Tri Minnesota Series that will cover a big portion of the more competitive races around here.  My 2009 schedule isn't a good one to look at since my IM CDA/ IM WI double really screwed up my local race schedule this season.  Here's my typical race schedule in past years - I like to include some running races to keep the running sharp

Trail Mix 25k trail run in April

Get in Gear Half Marathon in April (or 10k - the half was new this year)

Gear West Duathlon in May (Midwest Series)

Apple Duathlon in May (Midwest Series)

Buffalo Oly in early June (Tri Minn Series)

Liberty Half Ironman in June (Tri Minn - nice venue - held on Saturday so lets you get a long bike in on Sunday)

Timberman Oly in July (Midwest Series)  One of my favorite races - awesome venue up north

Spirit of Racine Half Ironman in July (Racine, WI)

Pigman Half Ironman in August (Midwest Series) often 3 weeks out from IM WI, but 4 weeks this year  usually HOT!!

Ironman Wisconsin in September

Also, in some years I have run the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon in June (sister race of Grandmas Marathon) but you can only get in via lottery.  As Bryan mentioned, Heart of Lakes (Midwest Series) is a very nice race, Manitou sprint (Midwest Series) is very popular also
