49ers Lineman Thomas Herrion collapsed in the lockerroom after the game and was pronounced dead 3 hours later.    Sad story.

I think NFL players are just too big....  So much stress on the body and organs....

Yeah, I was just reading this in an AP story. Here's the Sacramento Bee story:

http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/story/13453325p-14294359c.html

Not a hot day; no sign of distress; no previous history. Possibly just a random cardiac arrest, which might actually be more frightening.\

In the grand scheme of things- who cares?  From a humanitarian point of view... sure, I care.  But good people die every day, the fact that someone played ball for a living????  When something like this happens I always wonder why it is news.

flightmedic - 2005-08-22 5:20 AMor his gross weight might have been a factor?????????????????????
Football players aren't really known for their physical health. Big and bulky, yeah. Strong, yeah. But just because their arm and leg muscles are strong doesn't mean their hearts are strong.Sad. The news here keeps showing the family. That's what breaks my heart, to see the mom and other relatives dealing with the death of such a young man. I had to watch my grandmother deal with the death of two of her adult sons and that was hard enough, and both of them were in their 50s.

You know quite a bit about football players and health for someone who doesn't watch football. LOL

Haha!  Touche!  Actually, I don't have to watch the game to see the players and know that they can't be healthy, carrying around all that weight.  I'm sure that certain positions probably run more than others, but they don't strike me a folks who do any kind of endurance-focused workouts.

Although I'm sure that most football players could still run circles around me.

lifiting weights is hard on your heart. for every muscle head in there doing curls and bench presses for hours and hours, there is a greater chance of an unnecessary heart attack. seriously. if you are going to stress you heart out by lifting and then even more by becoming big, you MUST eat right and do lots of cardio to keep your heart healthy. apparently in ER's across america, the #1 busiest day for heart attacks is the day of the first snowfall, when big guys go out and try and shovel all day and their hearts can't take it.

but yeah it's sad when anyone dies young.... no more or less bc some guy plays fb for a living...

Really?  As someone who has spent the better part of his life strength training, I would love to see a reference for this.  Everything I have ever read (assuming a clean diet) suggests  that as you increase strength and HDL cholesterol, and decrease bodyfat % and LDL cholesterol you decrease your risk of heart problems.

Now if you are talking "big and fat", that is another story...

Did they find out the reason yet?

Officially, everyone's waiting for the toxicology reports. Unofficially, all the sports reporters are pointing to a family history of heart problems.

i know! sux doesn;t it!? I love lifting! i may have left out the part that says "w/ no extra cardio work to support it" And I will ask my spouse about a reference-- in this case, my reference is just "my partner who is a doctor..." lame, I know, but I will ask her what she means when she gets home in case I misunderstood.
