I'm looking at the participant list for Pineman...there are only 5 20-24 women registered! What the heck? It looks like 30-34 is jumping though. I've sort of been seeing this trend where it is a lot of "older" people (meaning older than me) at races, and not so much the young crowd...any explaination?

I'm sure you'll get lots of new thoughts on it, but here's a thread from not to long ago that talked about the same subject.

Mid-life crisis.  It's marginally cheaper than a sports car/mistress.

I am with you on the age thing, but I think that when people are younger they think they can go pro in football, baseball or something.

Once they hit 30s it is time to do something for yourself, at against yourself.

The first race I did when I was 24 I had 3 people in the my age group ( I placed), now I have jumped up a group (544 people) Quite a change.

That's funny

In my 20's I was still in great shape from college athletics, and staying fit/slim/being able to go for a day long hike or roller blade for a few hours or ski hard for 3-4 days was easy. Suddenly, at 30, fitness was not natural, the eating habits that had before been fine suddenly packed on weight, etc. At 30, my options for "fun" sports were limited (Not too many adult field hockey or lacrosse leagues in WI) so I started riding and swimming and running to get back in shape and saw a tri as a good goal.

Naturally, I also negelected to notice that a 30 yr old body doesn;t recover quite as fast as a 20 yr old, so overuse injuries abounded.

I know to many BTers, 30 doesn;t seem that old, and I should quit complaining. I am mostly speaking to you 20 somethings--DON'T LET UP, 3o sneaks up on ya!

It also has to do with cost. At 25 the last thing I could afford was a $3000 bike. Also I wouldn't have had the desire or discipline to train. I had other things on my mind for the evenings

Wait, did you say 3000 dollar bike? Well no wonder you do IM's in your sleep, sheesh. If I had a 3000 dollar bike, I am quite sure I'd be able to do a double IM....

NOT!

At 25, I couldn't afford a 30 dollar bike. At 33, I can barely afford my 800 dollar bike. So when will I be old enough for a rocket like madcow's??

LOL, I spit water on my computer screen.

Damn Possum, you're all fired up today.

I have a friend here at work and someone asked her if she had any kids and she said "No...not that I know of, heh, heh"

Most people in their 20's are getting home at 5 or 6am not getting UP.

When I was on my way to the NYC Tri in July, there were 4 obviously trashed girls in a cab next to me on their way home from a night of debauchery, singing away in the back of the cab. And here I am, on my way to jump in the Hudson just as the sun was coming up. I'm 35 and on occassion still have nights like that. But when I was in my 20's I was sleeping until 1 or 2 in the afternoon - exercise and training like this wasn't even in my realm of thinking.

My wife and I were having this discussion this weekend. In every race I do the 30-34 and 35-39 age groups are always the biggest. I think the folks in their 20's are still in relatively decent shape, typically don't have the disposable income for gear and entry fees, and probably aren't interested in the time investment. They are busy carving their way in this world. But once you hit your 30's, you start to realize how much you have let yourself go, you typically are a little more established financially, and are probably more willing to work at it. I can only speak for myself having just completed my last race in the 30-34 age group. No way I would have invested this much time or money when I was in my 20's. I had bigger fish to fry(or so I thought). I think once you get out of the 35-39 age group you start to have more physical issues but I think over time, the 40-49 groups will grow as these 30-39 groups age.

PRICELESS!

And, the pain threshold increases with age.  The one thing that is good about another birthday is that in 2 years, I'll zip into another AG and I'll be able to kick some ass.
