Ok, I've bid on and won a kestrel bike on e-bay, an km40 airfoil.  Now I'm hesitant to pay.  When I saw the bike was all carbone fiber I assumed it was fairly new.  Now I'm reading up and finde kestrel has made the airfoil for over ten years.  How do I tell the year of the bike?  Many people in the auction asked what year the bike was, but the seller was unsure.  I'm not sure I want to pay $1200 dollars for a very old bike.  Any advice for me?

Since you "bid on and won," aren't you obligated to pay? Does your lack of knowledge excuse you from that obligation?

Soooo...you had no idea how old the bike was, but you bought it anyway? Sounds like you don't need any advice, because I'm pretty sure you won't make that mistake again. As for not wanting to pay, that would be between you, the seller and ebay if you want to try to wriggle out of the sale, but at the end of the day, your winning bid was a contract to buy unless the seller misrepresented himself or grossly mislead you about the bike. Since he clearly communicated he didn't know the age of the bike, it's Caveat Emptor. As an ebay seller, I'd be pi$$ed if a buyer backed out; much headaches.

Okay, so now to be helpful

To determine the bike's age, many manufacturers have different colour schemes for bikes for different years; not sure if Kestrel does this, but it's worth researching the different years models since they started the airfoil in 1999.

Also, try emailing Kestrel  [email protected]  and ask them for assistance in identifying the age of the bike; a serial number would be helpful, if the buyer can prvide you with one (have him check under the bottom bracket for starters).

Kestrels have a pretty good reputation and following, so congrats on the purchase!

I know I must pay for the bike but he did say he was sure it wasn't very old.  It'll probably turn out to be a great bike!!!

Put up a link to the auction...I'm pretty familiar with Kestrels. If he said it wasn't very old, but it turns out that it's 10 years old, you could probably get out of the sale by filing a dispute with Ebay. Otherwise, buy it and if it's not for you, resell it.

Here's the link to the auction, Jim.

Seller only maintains it's "not very old" by virtue of its threadless stem. Ten years, in the scheme of things, could be "not very old."

It looks like it's a 2000 at the latest. In 2001, the frame seatpost clamp changed to a more aero, faired design. So, I guess "no that old" is vaguely accurate. At any rate, you can tell it's an older bike just from the rims (Mavic hasn't made CXP-12 rims in years) and the crank (clearly oldskool).

Don't sweat it, you bought a really nice bike for a great price. The paint scheme is relatively new for Kestrel, and with the 9spd components it's probably around a 2003 or 2004 model. I own a 52cm model, and keep an open search for any kestrel airfoil that pops up on eBay, so I saw this one when it was listed. The design of the bike was far ahead of its time, I believe Kestrel was one of the first to introduce a carbon fiber bike. The lack of a seat tube means that the ride is unbelievably smooth, the bike is light, fast, and handles extremely well. I have an S-Works Transition, an S-Works Tarmac, and the Kestrel airfoil. If I had to choose only one of them, I'd keep the Kestrel without any hesitation. I keep an eye on eBay with the intention of picking up another frame whenever one comes available.

Well the bike is on it's way and I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival!!  Any suggestions on what kind of wheels I should put on it? $200 to $400 dollar range please.

What's wrong with the wheels that come on it?

Hmmm, an ethical dilemma....should I tell you that you have a set of wheels (dura-ace hubs, mavic aero rims) that already meet your needs, or should I play to your desire to upgrade and offer you $50 bucks for the wheels? The bike takes 650c wheels, the best set (but were are talking only seconds of time savings) for this bike is the HED 3, used prices are from $600 to $1200 a set. For $400 you will probably not find a set of wheels that offer more performace than the ones you have. Check the tires for wear, Continental 3000 or 4000, or Michelin Pro2 race are available in 650c size and are great tires.

But if you want $50 for the wheels.....

Ok, the wheels are more than good enough for my needs.  Are there any componenets that you would change? I still have a lot to learn about bikes, and the best way is from those who already have experience.

If you still have money to spend, take it in to a reputable bike fitter and have him adjust it as best as he can to you. The FIST guy over here charges $100 for a thorough fit but will also to a quick down-and-dirty for $30.

As far as the rest of the components, they appear from the description to be more than adequate, give it a few hundred thousand miles before you get into the upgrade-just-for-the-sake-of-upgrading fever.
