Subject: Garmin 405 - Route Uploading issue

So I just got a Garmin 405, and took it on a trial walk with the dog...the data and route synch just fine with Garmin Training Center (about a minute's transfer, maybe less), and the distance (1.89mi.)and time (35m+) info come into BT just fine.  However, when I try to create a new route the Garmin Communicator plug-in just sits at 0%, forever...
It doesn't seem like too much data, based on the transfer to the Garmin software.
I've tried this with BT in Google Chrome, IE7, and Firefox and get the same results w/each.
The routefinder centers on my home location just fine.
I've also tried importing a file, and it just sits at "transferring data..." for too long.

 Help!  And thanks in advance,

We've seen this with others lately, seems to be only with newer 405s and between the unit and Garmin Communicator.  To confirm this, go to the Garmin API test page and do the following:

  1. Click Find Devices
  2. Leave the File Type as GPX and click Read From Device
  3. Watch the green area above the Find Devices button
If it stays at 0 this confirms that the problem is with the 405 ↔ Communicator. You'll have to call Garmin for help with that, but we'd really appreciate it if you could let us know what they say. As I said, some other people have had this problem and it's very frustrating to have our hands tied and not be able to provide a solution.

Of course I found nada in the knowledge base, so a support case has been opened.  I did it online to save the initial hassle of speaking to a guy named "Bob" on another continent

Love it. Funny how 80% of tech support guys are called "Bob".

One of the things I've noticed in 'exploring' possible solutions or workarounds...BT is config'd to upload/import GPX files exclusively, but Garmin TC and the GarminConnect online site only appear to export TCX file formats. Not sure of the distinction, but an attempt to work through an export & import cycle failed as well.

FYI yesterday I submitted a support case about this, adn surprisingly got no response of any kind, not even an auto-reply from a mailbot that my message arrived somewhere.

This is hardly encouraging coming form a company touted as the indsutry leader, blah blah blah.  I work in IT so I have some expectations for tech support communications that I don't think are out of line here.

Also Mike, I've been wondering about what you said about hearing about this from a number of other BT users.  If there's a value-add relationship between BT and Garmin, isn't it in everyone's interest to get this resolved between the organizations?  In other words who at BT could I contact to get some movement on the development teams to look into resolving what appears to be changes in a datafile layout, or something similar?

I'm a bit surprised. Garmin has a good reputation for customer service, although they've apparently stopped responding to developers about the Communicator interface.

As to who at BT to contact, that would be me. I have some ideas about this that I'm looking into, I'll be looking at it over the next couple of days.

Hey Mike -
Thanks for staying on top of this, at least I know BT is on the ball about it!

If there are any other suggestions you have about GPS trainers that work well with the site, I'm certainly open to that.  The route/map integration was what convinced me to buy in the 1st place, so if that turns out to be a dead-end I can always vote w/my dollars and return it.

My goal is to get this working for you this week. I'm sure there are a couple of ways to approach it, it's just a matter of determining the best one.

Garmin posted a minor version upgrade for the plugin, now at 2.6.4, on 3/5/09.
What's interesting is that this version doesn't return a 'passed test' result from their public page, unlike v2.6.3 which did.

Back to the developer API test page.  It finds my device w/the following results:
Part Number: 006-B0717-00 Software Version: 230 Description: Forerunner 405 Software Version 2.30 Id: 3505120936 -DataType--------------- Name: GPSData Extension: GPX Read: true Write: true -DataType--------------- Name: FitnessHistory Extension: TCX Read: true Write: false -DataType--------------- Name: FitnessUserProfile Extension: TCX Read: false Write: true -DataType--------------- Name: FitnessNewLeaf Extension: NLF Read: false Write: true -DataType--------------- Name: FitnessActivityGoals Extension: TCX Read: false Write: true -DataType--------------- Name: FitnessCourses Extension: TCX Read: false Write: true -DataType--------------- Name: FitnessWorkouts Extension: TCX Read: false Write: true
"Read from Device" now offers several TCX data options on top of just GPS a few days ago. Still no movement when using the default GPX data extension. Switching to TCX (All) successfully imports the two routes on the 405, and sampling a couple other options returns valid results (the routes match, as do the times). Don't know if this helps...

Steve, can you confirm that you have the ANT Agent running when attempting to upload a route? .

BTW, uploading a tcx file vs. a gpx isn't an option as a short term fix as it would be a relatively big project. We may have to create it as an option, but I don't see it the next few weeks.

Yep, ANT Agent is running.  and all the data drops into Garmin Training Center w/o issue, as does most of the other data into BT's log (e.g., time of day, start & stop times, distance).
I assumed that you'd probably be working with the current data format/stream, just put the import/export out there as something I had tested, didn't expect it to work with a new file format.
Also FYI I had originally x-posted this in Gear Reviews & Questions, and one reply stated they have to reboot following the Garmin TC automatic import to get theri data into the Training Log, which suggests a possible process or file lock; but then again, I'm a system admin, not a developer

After a lot of research and trial and error (and error and error...) I'm pretty much convinced that GPX exports are not possible with the ANT Agent, which means that the 405 is not currently compatible with the route tracker.

Which means I'm going to be busy in the near future working on a parser for tcx files.

We'll post here to let you know when it's available.
