Subject: An anomaly or "does my a$$ look big on this saddle"?
Back in May I snapped the seat bolt on my saddle about 15 miles from home http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...  I chalked it up to metal fatigue, replaced the bolt and moved on with my life.

So last Sunday, 42 miles in to a 50 miler I lean back a bit on my saddle and the same thing happens again!  The bolt shears in the middle, the seat goes flying and the naked seat post trashes a pair of Canari bib shorts not to mention gouges a nice 4" slash in the back of my left thigh.  So freaking lucky to avoid stitches.  At least this time I only have 8 miles to hobble home.

So WTF?  Not one other roadie I've talked to has ever experienced this (OK, I only interviewed 3, not a huge sample).   I'm 6'1, 215 so I'm  Clyde but certainly not the biggest guy on a bike.  I've narrowed the causes for this unusual chronic failure down to 3 possibilities:

1) The current state of metallurgy and mechanical engineering is in shambles.  Metal fatigue (and I'm not talking about listening to Motley Crue for 3 straight days) is at a historic high.

2) I put out so many blistering watts on the bike that seat post bolts can not stop me, they can only hope to contain me.

3) I have a big, fat a$$.

 I'm going with a combination of 1 & 2.

Are you tightening the bolt to much?  What are the torque recommendations?  That is another possible reason.

Before you throw down on the engineering profession, let's get a look at the bolt...post a close-up pic of the failure surface (s), if possible

My teeny tiny petite friend has snapped 2 seatposts in the last few months. She can't weight 100 lbs soaking wet. Turns out she was overtigtening the bolts on the carbon seatpost. Stress=break

Send me the failed bolt and I'll take it to the lab to check out #1 for ya. My guess is #2. (or overtightening of the bolt, but that's not as cool of an answer)

I think tasr just did this as well in June.  You could PM him for specifics.

I got it stuck in my own head too!

I had to do it!!

I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung
Wanna pull up tough
Cuz you notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh, baby I wanna get with ya
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But that butt you got
Make Me so horney
Ooh, rump of smooth skin
You say you wanna get in my benz
Well use me use me cuz you aint that average groupy

Strongly suggest a class 6 stainless steel bolt (gonna cost at least 2x as much as regular carbon steel, but worth it) and don't over tighten.
Also check to seeif the metal you are gong through is a dis-similar metal. You might be getting some sort of weird Galvanic action going on causing it to weaken (This is highly unlikely, but hey might as well check it all)

I bet she would have preferred an anesthetic to the hot coffee...
