Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I started this whole tri-deal a year ago.......started training in late Seotember for an early October 1/2 mary. I was hooked. Did a full Mary in March, BQ'd. Did a HIM in May, an Oly in June, a couple of OWS splash-n-dashes, IMWI in September and on my one year anniverssary of starting this whole process, I raced in a sprint tri. Initial goal - couch to IM, within everything in between, with a year. Check. Throw into the mix I have rheumatoid arthritis, and I've been doing medication adjustments along the way. I'm currently injecting myself with Methotrexate and taking plaquenil, relafin and Vicodin (prn) Now to the problem. Sometime shortly after Wildflower, the HIM in May, I started having a different kind of leg pain. Historically, I've had chronic piriformis pain, that has on occasion extended into the hamstring and/or itb area. Been seeing a massage therapist. This pain has prevented me from competing or watching my family with my family because I can't sit for long car rides. THIS pain has been going on for 2 years or more. It's just been getting a lot worse, and somewhat different since May. So, I told my self to HTFU, training for an IM hurts. Ran through the pain and was relatively happy with my races. Had a problem tripping with bad leg on multiple training runs. Saw a CMT (who did help) who wanted me to see a sports medicine guy at Stanford. THE guy, because she wasn't so sure it was all the muscles conspiring against me anymore. He specialiazies in endurance runners and triathletes, and he's head of the sports medicine department. THE guy had no vacancies until December. Left an oral history and was put on the wait list. Got a call back Monday saying he could see me same day, if I can get in. When he walks in, he advises he was late because his plane just landed - that he worked the medical tent at Kona. YES! an MD who gets IM!! I'm already to hand my life over - fix me. Did an exam, ordered an MRI. He's worried it's my back, hips or pelvis, and that the tight muscles are a symptom. He said he'd see me in 2-3 weeks, after I got the MRI and x-rays. So today, I got the MRI. Called his office to advise that the pics were on their way, and that I'd get the x-ray on the day of the appt (it's a 45 minute drive, and driving is very uncomfortable). They said that the radiologist would review the MRI, and then it would go to my doc, and if there was a problem they'd call, otherwise they'd see me on Oct 29. 45 minutes after I returned home from the MRI, the PA called and said the Doc would like to see me Monday - in 3 days. and to get the x-rays that morning. She had no clue why, only that he had her clear a spot for me. Now, I'm panicking. He must have seen something on my MRI, or wouldn't have pushed me into the next business day, right? Anybody dealt with anything like this? What could it mean? Could this affect Boston in April? CdA in June? My Turkey Trot next month?!? Any thoughts to help me get through the next couple of days before I know anything? My run has been tanking.....did a 3:59 Mary in March, 5:45 mary at IMWI. Bikes been okay, but not improving much. I ran/walked about 5 miles this morning, kinda against his advice. wanted to do it before I know what's going on for sure and I was completely forbidden. Hurt. Won't do that again. Drove carpools - hurt like he11, will have to do that again. REALLY want to get back on my bike. Help!!! Thoughts!! PLEASE!!! Edited by velcromom 2009-10-17 4:31 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hope that everything works out for you. Most of the medical stuff I do not understand and therefore will not comment on. However, maybe a spot cleared up for you because the doc is into Ironman and so are you. Also, to say your run has tanked based on a 3:59 stand-alone marathon vs a 5:45 IM marathon seems flawed. You've been doing this endurance thing for a little over a year, it is going to take some time. Relax until Monday, I hope to be racing with you in June. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No way to know. Don't freak out...won't do you any good! Be patient even though it's hard! |

![]() I like the Yoga suggestion.
Try to think of the positives, sounds like you have struck a gold mine in the Doctor dept. |
![]() ![]() |
Regular![]() ![]() | ![]() Stay positive......negative thoughts can tear you apart mentally and physically. Maybe since THE doc "gets IM" he knows what you are going through and the MRI showed nothing significant and there might be an easy fix. Thought number 2. Maybe you made an impression on him because of how you pushed through all the pain and all the patients he had scheduled on Monday need a simple dose of HTFU, so he squeezed you (a hardened athlete) in so you can get a little relief before your Turkey Trot. There are so many positive variances to this, focus on them! Good luck and keep us all updated.

I'd consider my good fortune in finding such a great doc and put my faith in him finding the problem and addressing it. Good luck and I'll thinking about you. Blair |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can't offer you advice, but your not alone. I went to the allergist Wed after having hives for 3 weeks (3rd go round too). Had battery of allergy tests, I'm not allergic to anything. Sent me for bloodwork. I looked up what it was for, thyroid problems, metabolic problem and autoimmune (lupus, etc) disorders! WTF? I went in to get rid of hives and your testing me for some scary stuff. It's hard not to freak, but I go with the doc is an IM and probably wants to get you back on track ASAP. Whatever it is, keep us posted! Lani |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We had something similar with an our daughter's ultrasound. Scary couple of days from the phone call to the appointment. It turned out to be that her risk of Down's syndrome went from 1:100,000 to 1:38000 or something ridiculous like that... Just because they want to see does not mean worse- or worst- case scenario, it could just be a "disclaimer" type deal. Best of luck, and we will await your update. |

You just did ![]() Well, I'm glad that at least you have a diagnosis and that it will still (hopefully) allow you to kick some Canadian cans in 2010. I suspect its pretty frustrating not knowing your recovery time, however. Good luck, follow the good Doc's advice (seriously, its not cool to cheat on your Docs) and try to keep those legs in shape. They are fabulous, after all. All the best! Blair |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know this isn't the best news but it isn't the worst either - sounds like you got a great Doctor too! Hang in there and listen to the Dr's so you can come back stronger than ever. Edited by bayrunner 2009-10-20 9:44 AM |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() pseudoyams is active here on BT and fighting through some similar issues. I believe he's had some of the treatments you are potentially facing. I'd advise you communicate with him. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My experience isn't very similar, but slightly so I'll throw in my $.02. I compressed L4 and L5 when I was 17 and it had me in crazy pain (I can't believe what you've done with the injuries you have BTW- props for that) until I finally decided to give my body the rest it needed. Once I gave my back some time for some REAL rest and recovery, it didn't take too long for me to get back to 100%. So try to be good, as hard as it is- and hopefully you'll be back in the saddle in no time. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks all....coming to grips with this. Maybe they'll get me PT that will strengthen my very pathetic core - could be an upside! AND.....I got the confirmation e-mail from Boston today, they confirmed my results and I'm in! Crossing fingers........ |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you search the forums you'll find lots of "similar situations" of people with disk problems who made full recoveries - me included (after surgery). When I read your original post I was thinking it sounded A LOT like how my leg felt when I had a herniation at L4/5. I know it is a setback and frustrating, but in the grand scheme of things this is a great reason for a doctor to clear his schedule for you. MANY people have success with non-surgical treatment (sometimes it just takes time). Most of the rest respond very well to surgery. So you might have some downtime, and that might be hard for someone who goes from no tri to every major tri distance in a year, but you should be back on your feet in time. Good luck. |
