I've read through a bunch of IM training plans and decided to go with Don Fink's.

I will be starting this program basically on January 1st for the IMLP.

I've read in these forums that a lot of people either used this plan or are going to use this plan. What did or are you going to do for the 4 months prior to the start of the program?

I'm going to try to keep a base, but I would like to back off a bit from training through the Holidays.

I'm currently using his Competitive 30-week program to train for IM Malaysia and am in the first month.

Even the Competitive program starts off very light (7 hrs/wk, and 8.5 average for the first four weeks). If you do a winter maintenance program, you should be all right.

I used the Don Fink IronFit for my first IM.  Liked it.

Good luck in your training.

I plan on using the Intermediate plan - with some modifications. For IMLP too.

I used the competitive plan for IMLP this year and really liked it. Although I was far from competitive, I was able to finish comfortably with a time I'm reasonably happy about. Last year around this time I began to cut back on my training and actually took the entire month of Oct. off from everything athletic. I felt recharged at the beginning of Nov. and spent the time until the plan actually bega reestablishing a base. Good luck.

Don Fink's book was my first introduction to Ironman. Read it in 2 nights and 7 months later finished 140.6.
The training plan in his book helped me guide my own plan. I referred to it wondering what's the longest run and bike, or what is a good taper etc... I'm a firm believer in creating your own plan. When you create your own plan you feel more in control of your training and learn a lot in the process.

I have completed 5 triathlons since 2005 and have never followed a plan. I just do what I feel like on the day but I have a tendency to push too hard in a short period of time.

I want to follow this plan as it's designed for the working/family man and it really fits my life style (mornings and lunches).

Also, I want to follow this plan to slow me down and reduce my chances of injury. Without a plan I may skip a bunch or workouts early on and try to make up for them towards the end.

I agree with Vineman about making your own plan and I will tailor this plan a bit to go with my strengths and weaknesses.

I followed the Don Fink competitive plan for IM KY.  I'll let you know in a few days how it went.  :-)  I liked the plan and felt good during training.  I did train on my own without a plan from August to February (when the plan started).  This will be my first IM.

I have found this book really motivating and the plans easy to understand. Got really confused Friels' "Bible"

I am (only!) doing Germany IM 70.3 next year. How would you folks adapt his programs to half IM?

I used the competitive plan IMKY/Louisville and finished in 12hr 30min. During the  entire 30 week schedule I followed the bike and swim workouts nearly to the letter sometimes increasing rides in length or adding in extra one when time permitted.

I ran a bit more than it suggested. I plan on using it again next year for IMMOO 2009. Louisville is to far from the Twin Cities two years in a row.

I'm looking for a new plan for IMWI 09. Where did you find Fink's? Is it just in his book or are you using his online coaching service?

I have really debated with using the Fink 30 week plan.  I used BT's 20 week Intermiediate for MOO '08.  I really liked it but want to step it up a small notch for '09.  Problem with using Fink instead of BT is that it is so nice having all of the BT plan downloaded on you training schedule every single day.

I made it a few chapters through his book and just wasn't clicking with it.  Not that his approach is wrong in any way, it just wasn't for me.

I loved the competitive plan.  I finished my first ironman (KY) in 12:24.  I trained on my own before the plan started and then followed the plan pretty close.  I added in a few longer ride since biking is my weakest area.  I felt great during the race.  Run was rough, but I think the 93 degree temp & humidity had something to do with that.  I'm doing the Great Floridian IM at the end of October, so I'm back on the plan.  For me it worked.  :-)

stchase - Great question. I'm in exactly the same situation. I've started the plan already and will start it over in Jan. Doing IMLP also.

CONGRATS!!! That's a great time!

I'm really interested in what people did the few months prior to using this plan? or any plan?
At this time, I'm still increasing my workouts week by week but come October and November I would like to start really tapering my workouts to allow my body to rest and repair.
What did you do the month or months before you started your IM training plan?
