Has anyone ever just done the swim in tri shorts and a sports bra?

I looked at the tri-tops, but none that I found were built to support 'larger' women.

I generally wear 2 sports bras whenever I work out, so my plan for the tri was to wear tri shorts and my 2 sports bras, so I don't have to change at all.  I'm hoping they will dry enough along the 17 mile bike so that they won't be wet and annoying for the run.

Any thoughts?

Lots of women race in tri shorts and a sports bra.  You could also do a sports bra with a tri top with built in support on top to double up.  But either way you'll be fine.

Thanks!

I told it to one of my female friends (who has never done a tri) and she was afraid the bra would chafe (sp??? :-p) if I ran with it wet.

So I figured I'd ask people who have probably done it before :-p

Body Glide is your friend.  And try it before race day.

as with any clothing, if its going to chafe when wet, then its going to be a killer training in the heat as well.

Get synthetic sports bras. Or at least one synthetic bra, and then the tri top over that (which will also be synthetic). Almost ALL women wear a sports bra underneath their tri tops. I would heartily advise against cotton of any sort, anywhere, during a tri. Don't know what sixe you need, but I  the C9 from Target - great support yet nice and soft. Hard to find that combo and not break the bank.

Does anyone know of a sports bra that supports a 34D and doesn't look more like a bra than a sports bra?  I am self conscious of wearing my sports bra by itself because it fastens like a regular bra in the back and I don't want people pointing an laughing at the lady wearing a bra.  However, those nike bras and such just don't support my post kids chest.

I find it quite difficult to find a very supportive sports bra (34D also) that doesn't clip in the back like a regular bra.  The CWX Xtra Bra ($$$) still hooks in the back but criss-crosses and doesn't look like a bra.  Otherwise, I'm a fan of the Moving Comfort Fiona bra, though it has the 3 hooks in the back.

I wear tri shorts (BT shorts!) and a sports bra.  I throw on my tri top after the swim.  I wear a Champion under wire sports bra- very supportive for my 38C/D.  I HATE non-hooking bras- I can never get them tight enough to be supportive and still get them over my shoulders.  Never 'lost' a bra due to  unhooking.

Don't worry, you will be mostly dry by the time the run rolls around.

I've done lotsa races with a sports bra and tri shorts - 36DD and the Moving Comfort Fiona is wonderful. It does have the hooks in back that you don't enjoy but I figure, who's looking at the hooks? Like someone said, Body Glide is your friend. Be generous.  For sprints, I'll toss on a loose wicking shirt and for my HIM, I wiggled into a bike jersey - this year I got a tri top and will be racing in that for all 3 events - with the bra underneath, of course.

hmm

I don't really want to spend the money for a tri top as this is only my first tri, and we'll see how it goes if I'm gonna keep it up!

Yeah, there's not a lot out there that will support a 34DD (although I've found the ones with the hooks are better - I love my Under Armour one - it looks like a sports bra, even though it does have hooks - it's probably the only bra I can come close to wearing by itself (not doubled))...but I will look at all your suggestions!  Hopefully something will work.... :-p

another option is to wear a sports bra with a synthetic tank on top.  Lots of workout tanks at Target for $20.   If you are planning to race the entire race in just the sports bra, then this is a moot point.  But if not, putting stuff on when wet is a pain.  If it's tight enough, better just to swim in it.  Most stuff dries while you're on the bike.

Just try out whatever you think you want to do in training and you'll know how it's gonna work out.

hehe - I'm hoping to the do the entire thing in just a sports bra, but I've got about 10 lbs to lose before I feel comfortable doing that!!!

I do have a loose running shirt I can throw on after the swim if needed.  I was more concerned about swimming in a sports bra and just not removing it at all...

I have done a few tris swimming in just a sports bra and tri shorts...although I did pull a shirt on in T1.

I have this bra
http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/242,19016_Zoot-Sports-Trifit-Bra...
I have swum in it alone and under a 1 piece tri suit. It is very supportive. I am a 38 DD and had also used 2 sports bras while working out. I feel like I get enough support with this one.

Also...not for wearing in Tris but for general running I switched to the Enell Sports Bra.

YES!!!  I did a ton of research and found the CWX Firm Support bra for 34D and I LOVE IT!

http://www.ems.com/1/1/2555-cw-x-womens-firm-support-bra.html

I got mine on sale, but it's worth every penny for an endowed woman.  As well, you can go to www.titlenine.com which is a great site for women's apparel and bras.

Good luck.  And to the OP- great job trying everything out before. If you plan to go with just bra and shorts, make sure you can handle the water temp on race day.

Good luck!!

I recently saw some super support Under Armor bras that were designed to support larger cup sizes that were like a regular sports bra but they zipped in front instead of hooking in the back.  There were definitely Ds in the display, I didn't look for DDs though.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I posted a similar question for bras adn got more infor here.  I am uncomfortable with my chest size and feel better knowing that I am not the only one facing these issues.

I don't even have C's, but I've raced in the bra top of my Speedo 2-piece bathing suit.  I think it would make a great base layer under a supportive bra top for a larger breasted woman.

I also swim and race in Under Armour tank tops and find them to be even less chafing and quicker drying than so-called tri specific shirts that are usually more expensive.
