Subject: What made me quit triathlon
Last October, I did my first triathlon. It was an Olympic. I trained hard and did well, but afterward, I decided that I would never do another triathlon. After crossing the finish line, my wife asked how it went. I responded with "These people are masochists." I spent the next hour explaining how everyone who does this is an absolute nutter.

After the pain subsided, I was planning my next triathlon, but it never happened. I had effectively quit. There was only one reason for this, and it was the water.

On the morning of my triathlon, I awoke at 4:00 AM and arrived at the transition area at 5:00. It was pitch black and freezing cold. Shortly after the sun peeked over the horizon, it was time for my group to enter the water. It was dark, muddy and 52 degrees. I crawled across a field of extremely sharp rocks until I hit a gooey muck that swallowed my feet. The shock of the water was unbearable, but the worst was yet to come. At the start of the race, I found myself in the midst of the expected washing machine of bodies. What I didn't expect is how much it would suck to be kicked in the face, have my feet grabbed and to be swam over. It seemed that everyone time I touched someone's feet, a ferocious attempt would be made to kick me. It was pure war and I didn't care for it.

The rest of the race was great, but I found myself with a lot to learn about the art of suffering. I'm back on the horse and am training harder than ever. My first goal was to break three hours. My next is to break into the top 100. I can't wait for my next triathlon, but I don't think I'll ever look forward to freezing water at 7:00 AM and fighting through the washing machine.

Edit:  Fixed the Mac carriage return bug.

Well written review of what happened during your first few races ... but note that they get easier.

To avoid he washing machine, give the other swimmers a :20 second head start. In the grand scheme of things you probably lost that trying to avoid the clubbing.

The funny thing is I've never had that washing-machine, heavy-physical-contact kind of swim in any triathlon I've done yet, with distances from sprint to Oly to 1/2 IM. I must be picking the right races LOL

x2.  As a MOP swimmer, I seed myself accordingly near the other timid (or smarter...kidding) folks.  Even with IM MOO didnt have a terrible swim experience like that.  There is something for getting accustomed to OWS too.  Good luck to ya!

I'd suggest finding a TT start swim where the swimmer are more spaced apart.

In a wierd kinda way, I actually like the mosh pit at the beginning.  I'm not a freak or anything, but I do get a rush out of the first 100 yards.  I'm not a very fast swimmer,  about 7 min 1/4 mile in the ocean, but it sure is fun to have a little excitement at the start before settling in on the race pace heart rate etc.  Also, I don't throw elbows, kick, or even get mad at those who do, I just find it to be a thrill.

Become a stronger swimmer. Then you will enjoy the battle at the start of the swim.

Do a different race, level of competition varies between races.  Like stated above start out a little behind everyone.  I have done three OWS's this year and never had that happen but my races were all Sprints (and I hung out at the back to start).

I haven't done any races this year.

Paying to do races seems backwards. To be highly competitive requires shelling out money on bike components. FOP isn't all that fun, maybe #1 is, for the most part, it's pretty much doing your own race. Races start way too early.

I find it's more enjoyable not racing, just do the training for fitness.

I agree.  I would say 2 years ago was my best year OWS.  I did alot of swimming in lakes and loved he swim start.  I have not done as much lately and it is tougher at the start.

Do a lot of OWS. I swim side stroke and my legs dont work so I am a bit slower that the norm...but yo learn to feel comfortable getting gragged under..its kind of exciting....but then again I am not all there...LOL

You know I hate the washing machine too, I freak out alittle when getting knocked around. My solution, get to the outside of the first turn and stay out there you might swim a bit further, but you can sight off of the pack (don't have to pick your head up), and makes passing pretty easy, and not as many waves. I am never going win a swim so why get beat up in the process?

Well written, but I have to take it with a grain of salt after reading your race report. It didn't sound that bad from the report. However your report says about your swim time:

24:55:40 | 1640.4 yards | 1h 31m 11s / 100yards

It's no wonder you have a bad memory of the swim. It took more than a day to complete it.  :-)

Hello

Move south and race in 84 degree water.

Just an idea.
