Anyone thinking of doing that one? I hear it is a blast! If you are thinking about it or has done it, do you recommend that I rent a wetsuit? Have not done OWS yet, how is the water usually? Hoping to see you there!

I thought about it, but may be doing Milton OLY instead.  I think it shoud be pretty warm for the swim.  I would not plan to use a wetsuit.

I'm doing the Wasaga sprint and will be wearing a wetsuit.
Do you need a wesuit, no avg water temp is approx 72
Will several people be wearing them, yes.
I like the added speed bonus it gives me.

Being new to tri's, I didn't know there was a tri in Wasaga on the 12th.  I may go depending on how it goes at the Orillia tri this weekend.  I haven't been to Wasaga in a while but isn't the beach only about 18 inches deep for about 500 meters from the shore?

Wasaga is an awesome venue..most of the tourists have finished for the summer and we get the whole beach to ourselves. Water is relatively warm and shallow for most of the swim but wear a wetsuit anyway. http://www.foottools.ca/these guys are in Burlington and I think they rent out Nineteen brand wetsuits. One thing that has been trouble in the past has been rough water conditions. This weekend looks like it will co-operate but if it is too rough the sprint and Oly races will have their swims moved inland to the canal. The GT loses out though because water traffic picks up around the time it is supposed to start. If the swim is cancelled they make it a run/bike/run event.

Thank you all for your great tips and info...Well, I'm all ready for it! All I need is to figure out how to lay out my gear properly to make the transitions effective. Got vibrant colors to find my bike, practicle apparel to swim, bike and run in, bike just got serviced, opted for no wetsuit, lack of time to swim and shop for it! Am I forgetting anything besides planning on having fun?
Wish me luck and the wisdom to put on my helmet before I unrack my bike! If anyone from here will be there let me know!

I'll see you in transition...my first oly, too...my fifth race...ack. I'm a bit freaked about the swim - I'm not so fast. Once I'm on the bike, I'll be soooooo happy.

Good luck everyone - have fun!

Well, wonderful weather, wonderful venue, fantastic organisation, had a blast and came in third in my AG! What a wonderful experience for my first time! The swim was interesting as it was choppy and very shallow for most of it. Made the mistake of trying to run though the water as opposed to just swim but learned my lesson! T1 was fast and lowered my placement during the bike and again during the run...So all and all, I am very satisfied! Now I am hooked and moving from being a runner to being a triathlete right after my 2 1/2 mary! This is awesome!!!! Only cloudy moment was the triathlete that went down at the finish line of the Oly. My thoughts and prayers are with is family...

Great job, Rockfalls! You must be really pleased! Was a beautiful day...too beautiful. Last two races were in cloud and rain, so didn't actually think that I might need sunscreen. Three+ hours in the sun...ouch.Great race, though - lots of fun. Oly for you next year.I didn't see the racer go down at the finish. I hope he's OK.

From multisport website

On Saturday September 12, 2009 Matthew Tatham completed the Olympic Distance Triathlon finishing 1st in his age group and 40th overall in a field of 294 athletes. Matt collapsed just past the finish line and while paramedics were with him immediately, he passed away 35 minutes later at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital. We want to pass on our condolences and deepest sympathies to Matt's family and friends.

I saw that announcement on the website, so tragic.  I did the Wasaga Du, beautiful weather, and water was calm for a change.  So sad what happened, the guy was obviously an experienced triathlete, in the M50-54 AG according to the results.  Anybody knows this guy?

Somebody at the scene described what happened on his blog - "All the while the Race director John Salt shedding tears, along with one of the Matthew Tatham friends and other people watched in horror."  That is soooo sad...
