Pre-race routine:

Slept in early (@9 pm) since I had a long drive in the morning.
Packed TRI-bag and bike into car and only had the water/electrolyte in frdige to be picked up in the morn.
Got up at 4 am , had PBJ at around 4:30 am or so and was ready to leave at 5 am but waited for wife to get ready since she was ready too . Left home at around 5:15 am.

Reached event locn at 5:45 am . Got registered (had to fill in the waiver again inspite of doing it online!) & got body-marked (no line at this time). Went ahead and got the bike setup towards the far end close to a balloon on the rack behind me :)

Was all setup by 6:30 and went towards the spectators area to get the wife setup so she doesn't have to move around much (she's pregnant ;) )
Event warmup:

Started stretching 15 mins. prior to the race . did some in-place jogging and light stretches to prepare for the swim. Stretched while I was listening to the pre-race talk and went into the lake for the 2nd part of the pre-race talk .
Swim
  • 30m
  • 700 yards
  • 04m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started out doing the crawl since there were people around me and then when I got comfortable I started doing the freestyle but found that I was real slow as a lot of people were racing far away from me . Eventually switched over to breaststroke since I felt that it was much faster and it was :)

Was probably taking it a bit too easily ... heck , I even watched a couple of swimmers go off-course and see the lifeguards try to rein them in :)

All in all , was a good swim considering I was LOBOP or maybe the last in my AG but still was a comfortable one albeit not too fast .
What would you do differently?:

Get my freestyle speed improved for starters ;)
Also, get focussed on swim and not watch all and sundry :(
Transition 1
  • 04m
Comments:

T1 time is approx. since no splits is provided by event .

Everything went as planned . Had my gel and drink before starting off. washed feet and dried off before socks went on just fine and got on the bike quite well .
What would you do differently?:

Probably need to time myself next time so I know how much time it takes .
Ensure that the bike is in a low gear next time and not medium so it reduces gear-switching time in the beginning.
Bike
  • 45m
  • 18 miles
  • 24.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a great bike ride ... no , AWESOME , actually !
On my training rides , have pushed myself quite a bit , but was able to do everything right ... do the right gear changes , maintain the right cadence , generate very good speeds (upto 30 mph) on one stretch .

The hill on the return was one where I struggled ... just 'cos I was scared of shifting into too low a gear since that would change the front sprocket and has screwed up my rhythm in the past .
Was probably pushing myself a lot on the bike but it was all good :)
What would you do differently?:

Try and figure out the hills/gears vis-a-vis the low gears so I use all 21 gears instead of only the middle 9 gears :(
Work on my cornering skills so I don't lose time on these .

Transition 2
  • 03m
Comments:

Again , split times are approx.

T2 was very efficient . Had gel+water . Stretched a bit too and then headed out on the run . Was comfortable when I set out on the run .
What would you do differently?:

Nothing ... was perfect :)
Run
  • 44m
  • 4 miles
  • 11m  min/mile
Comments:

Was brutal ... absolutely brutal !
Was expecting a hill or two but this more of a "hill-trail" than anything else . Nothing like what I had prepped for . Was thinking more like some flat trails with a hill or two thrown in . To compound this , my HRM just gave up after the bike so wasted a min. or two trying to get it to work . Furthermore , due to the criss-crossing structure of the route , I had no idea of the mileage , only time . Hence , I was unaware of how much more was there and hence how much to push myself .

The best part of the run , was when I got down from the hills on level land and someone said 100 metres to go ... its like my legs started sprinting towards the finish :)
So , yeah , I finished real strong at the end .

What would you do differently?:

Train on hills ! Hills , Hills , Hills for the next event :)
Do a couple of runs where I don't have mile markers or the HRM with me to get a bearing for time-based running .

Post race
Warm down:

Was a little too hyper to warm down correctly . Stretched a bit between euphoric high when i was explaining to the wife about the various legs of the race .

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A slowish swim but more than that was the lack of preparedness for the run which sucks since that was to be my strongest event ;)

Event comments:

Was a well organized race though I think a bit more info. on the various legs of the race would be helpful. IMHO , the run leg was just the most wierd setup but maybe some of the smaller TRI's are like this.

Sounds like you had a great race!

They set up the run leg that way cause they want it all to be inside the park and because, IMO, they want to see how many hills they can make you go up and down.  The swim and the bike are easy on this one, so I guess they feel they have to make up for that on the run.

RD: Hmm... now, let's see if we turn here then we can make the racers run up that hill twice!

Race Staff:  Yeah!
