Total Time = 2h 33m 54s
Overall Rank = 25/82
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 4/12
Pre-race routine:

I got up around 3 and had breakfast. My son came to the race with me - first time anyone in my family has come to one of my races.
Event warmup:

I did some light stretching..
Swim
  • 21m 36s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Considering my time and the fact that it was a significant distance to the transition area, the swim course was either WAY short. On the first lap I stayed quite a ways away from the buoys. I kept a pretty good pace for me. My broken clavicle from the last week in March haunted me when I tried to zip up my wetsuit. I pulled on the zipper and got a shooting pain in my shoulder. Fortunately a fellow competitor helped me out.
What would you do differently?:

Not crash my bike 6 weeks before the race. . .
Transition 1
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Fairly slow in the transition. Getting the wetsuit off was the most time consuming.
What would you do differently?:

I didn't do any transition practice. I hadn't gotten my wetsuit on in almost a year.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 8s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.39 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my first ride on my tri bike and first pace over 20 mph. I went out a bit fast and started to feel it in my quads. Overall I maintained a decent pace with good gear changes. I was very cautious on turns and rough pavement. I was having flashbacks to my two crashes from the past year and didn't want a third. On big downhills I coasted and got out of the drops. Max speed was 29 mph. I carried a 20 oz. single bottle with Gatorade. I ran out by mile 14.
What would you do differently?:

My second water bottle slot behind my seat I put my toolkit in. Next time I'll take a second bottle with drink. I can't complain too much since this was my PR for the bike segment. Without the training shortfalls due to injury I think I could have been over 21 mph.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

This was my fastest T2. I'm not sure why. The official results did not include T2.
Run
  • 56m 28s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

My left hamstring was a bit sore but I was slow enough that it didn't bother me too much. My legs were pretty dead and I told myself to wait until at least 3 miles to see what I had left for picking up the pace. AS it turned out, I didn't end up picking up the pace but was able to maintain a fairly consistent pace considering the hills. This was the first race where I drank at every aid station. I figured I should since I didn't get enough on the bike. My left shoulder really started to ache about half way into the run, but it didn't get too bad.
What would you do differently?:

I was hampered by straining my left hamstring a few weeks ago. I'd only trained 15 miles in the last 3 weeks. This was my slowest run for this race (4th year).
Post race
Warm down:

Not much.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injuries over the past 6 months have been a problem. BIke crash in november I broke my left scapula. In the end of March I broke my left clavicle and cracked two ribs. The injuries didn't hamper me too much, but my training suffered.

Event comments:

This year seemed to be a bit less organized than the past. I'm not sure why. There was plenty of help on the run - more than past years, so it was easier to stay on course for the run and for the bike.

With all of the injuries you have sustained recently a 2:33 for an Oly seems very acceptable.

Congrats on a finely run race!

I agree that the swim was a little bit short.  I felt the same after looking at my times.  I feel like my swim was faster than what I would have been able to sustain for a mile and I felt pretty decent when I left the water.  I also hated that they didn't split the T2 time out as well.  I used my watch time for T2 like you did.
