  • Comments: This was my 6th time at this race. Although I just turned 58, I had my fastest bike and run splits for this event. The swim was quite a bit different from years past, or I would likely have had a PR. The race this year had more volunteers and there were no issues with missing turns (like what happened back when I did this race in 2014.

  • Comments: I can't really rate the race this year since I didn't finish. Having the county sheriff send me in the wrong direction on the bike was a total bummer.

  • Comments: This is a great season-start race at a beautiful state park. They give you a really nice pint glass in your goody bag. The AG plaques are very nice. The course is well marked and volunteers helpful. The weather this year was perfect.

  • Comments: I believe they should try to make sure they get a better starting marker for the swim. I feel this swim is short and then they allow athletes to wade out into the water too far prior to starting the race. That said, it would be hard to do because of the large numbers of rocks on the bottom of the swim course. A beach/running start would be horrible and possibly unsafe for the athletes. This is not a complaint but an observation. Simply marking the start and making some slight course length adjustments would avoid a short swim course. • Comments: I love the state park setting for this race. Camping and racing just plain make me happy. It's a very well organized race (started a bit late due to the pre-race talk going a bit long). However, it's not a well-attended race. They added the sprint distance and a 5K to add options. They've only had pancakes and strawberries for post race food in the past but this year they added pasta, bread, cookies and fruit which was nice. The RD came and sat with me at the beach on Friday and said he's hoping to turn the race over to someone else because he's done it for so long and is burning out. I sure hope someone steps up to the plate because this is a great tri season opening event.

  • Comments: This year seemed to be a bit less organized than the past. I'm not sure why. There was plenty of help on the run - more than past years, so it was easier to stay on course for the run and for the bike.

  • Comments: The RD put together a VERY challenging course. I loved the effort I had to put out today. I guess my mantra on race day is: "If it doesn't hurt, you didn't race hard enough." And this race hurt, so hats off to the RD for a well organized and developed race. Results: http://www.teamtrifort.com/images/2012_images/POKAGON_2012_TRI_OLYM...

  • Comments: Finally broke 2:30, YAY! While the swim was certainly too short, my disadvantage on the trail run should about level that out. So I am hoping to break 2:30 again at other races this year! Great season opener!

  • Comments: This race was so much fun. Well organized. I got a kick out of them saying my name on the loud speaker as I moved from the swim to the bike, the bike to the run and then at the finish. Nice personal touch although there wasn't any one there who cared who I was. :) I loved being in a state park and the beauty of racing through different terrain. Fun, fun, happy, happy and finishing with a smile is what it's all about for me.

  • Comments: Very, very, unique and fun race. The RD is detailed and takes care of his athletes. The venue is great. Lake is clean, and the park is beautiful. Tough run to get a rhythm, but kind of cool in its own right.

  • Comments: This is a great race and very well run. The race bag had lots of good stuff including great race tech shirt and beer mug. The pancakes were good and award plaques were the best I have seen. That swim course needs to be revised so there is not a turn buoy 50 yards from the start. Very good and challenging race.

  • Comments: Absolutely loved this race. Wish I had done better in it, but happy with overall outcome and effort level. Standing by the fire after the race watching the volunteers flipping pancakes and being so friendly made me realize why I race triathlons. It was just a great, warm feeling. This is a really, really challenging course from the cold water to the constant hills on the run. It is what a triathlon is supposed to be. I can easily see why this race was selected as the region's special qualifier for Tuscaloosa. It is fantastic. If they can work out a way to more clearly mark the run course, it will be perfect.

  • Comments: This was a well run race. The water was cold but clean and beautiful. The roads were a little rough but well marked and staffed with volunteers. The run was a crazy, challenging mess. It may not have been fun while the race was in progress but somehow I still came out of there feeling like I had a blast - bad race and all. I'm already ready to take my revenge on this course next year.
