Total Time = 1h 59m 12s
Overall Rank = 42/211
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/34
Pre-race routine:

Drove up with Tom to FTC the night before and stayed in a hotel. Slept poorly as usual. Up at 5:00 am and had a Clif bar and banana.
Event warmup:

Ran about ten minutes and swam about 100 yards. Better than what I normally do.
Swim
  • 16m 3s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in a good spot towards the right and swam great for the first 200 or so. Mixed up the breast stroke as needed. Shoulders definitely started getting sore at the turnaround. Sighting was great and I swam straight lines. Came out about 5th in my wave.
What would you do differently?:

Shoulders. Wetsuit seems to exacerbate this as well.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Not bad but I wanted to wear socks to prevent blistering and this added a good bit of time.
Bike
  • 57m 10s
  • 12.2 miles
  • 12.63 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty good ride and happy with my time and rankings. Not a difficult or technical course but there are tight turns and very narrow singletrack with rogue rocks. And because it was two laps, there was a lot of tough passing to be done. First lap wasn't bad but the second lap had me riding with the last swim waves.

Dropped my chain twice and hit rocks hard enough that it caused me to unclip three different times. Pushed the ride though out and legs felt good off the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Pretty quick transition, 3rd best in my AG.
Run
  • 43m 28s
  • 4.97 miles
  • 08m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Came out of transition with a stomach cramp that got worse. Extremely frustrating as my legs felt good but I couldn't push it as the cramp was very painful. Tried different breathing, massage, short walk: nothing helped. Cramp finally released at about 4 miles and I was able to really pick up the last mile but too little, too late.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure what this cramp was all about. Only drank about a 1/2 bottle of Cytomax on the bike, though I did push the bike hard. Haven't cramped like this in awhile. I think I lost a good 3-4 minutes because of this.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and stretched a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was all good except for the cramp on the run. Could have been a really great race, maybe top 5 in my AG.

Event comments:

Great course. Not ridiculously hard like Beaver Creek but still challenging. Well run and beautiful swim and run.

Immediately I felt attracted by the challenge. I have done plenty of biking this summer and a new motivation, particularly toward the end of the summer, was what I needed.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
