Steelman Triathlon
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 38m 36s
Overall Rank = 306/328
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 34/34
Pre-race routine:

Bagel, cream cheese, Greek yogurt, half a banana
Event warmup:

Short run to wake up the legs; swim to the first buoy (turn for the Sprint)
Swim
  • 40m 8s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

Got kicked, grabbed, bumped, etc. It was all good. NBD Wading in on the rocks hurts the feet, but once you're in it's go time.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on sighting/navigating better. Even though I was spotting the buoys fine, when I'd drop down and just swim with my head down I was pulling to the right. When practicing with eyes closed at the YMCA I pulled left....oh well.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

I don't clip in. I had the shoes on before running with the bike. Used tri-shorts so nothing needed to hop right on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I was happy with my transition given my current equipment.
Bike
  • 1h 43m 9s
  • 24.6 miles
  • 14.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Once I got going I was fine. I pulled a >14 mph pace which is great for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Except for a leg cramp I was happy with the bike. This being my first real tri I guess I could have left one of my Gatorade bottles to save weight and grabbed one at the bottle spot.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

It probably helped that my rack-mates were all finished before me so I had lots of space, not that I was squeezed in too tight.
What would you do differently?:

Again, I was happy with my transitions. They were middle of the pack compared to my racing portions.
Run
  • 1h 10m 56s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Ice under the hat was great. You pass the ice station 4 times.
What would you do differently?:

I should have been better at the run since that's my best of the 3 sports. I think it comes down to conditioning. I need to do more long rides with run bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice towel; static stretching; continuous walking

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim: better navigating on the course
Bike: More intervals to increase my speed. I think my bike has more speed in it.
Run: conditioning, not of the run individually but along with a long ride to keep the heart rate up for longer periods of time.

Event comments:

This was a great race for my first REAL tri. So why did I rate it high? It seemed great to me and I heard multiple people talking about how great this was compared to other races.

I really want to do an Olympic distance but I feel it is a little too far right now. Which training plan should I follow? The sprint sounds too easy for what I'm doing but the Olympic seems too much?

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.
