Overall Rank = 31/350

Age Group Rank = 2/32
Pre-race routine:

late start, so I was able to sleep in a little. had some coffee, a banana, and a protein shake before getting my gear together and heading down to transition. love that everything happens right there at Las Palomas (where we were staying). racked my bike and headed down to the beach
Event warmup:

thought about a short swim in the pool beforehand to loosed up the arms and shoulders. didn't need to as it became a modified swim
Swim
  • 06m 55s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

see above. this was not a swim. the day following the race and the day after, the Sea of Cortex was as calm as a lake and no wind.
What would you do differently?:

nothing I could do differently here.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 35m 4s
  • 9.4 miles
  • 16.08 mile/hr
Comments:

took a little while to settle in, but then got it going. really flew down the back half of the way out. took the u-turn to head back to transition and the wind hit hard. i was so focused on the wind that I forgot to move the the small ring. figured that out and found my groove, really worked hard to try and maintain pace with the other races (at a blistering 13.5 mph). the elites passed me like I was standing still, but I was able to make a few passes myself.
What would you do differently?:

get a sail for the way out?
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 24m 32s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

hardly saw anyone in the first mile, but started to catch a few people in the 2nd. course was a little crowded after that with the 5K and 10K runners going through also. saw my wife at 2.5mi and grabbed her a$$ as I passed going up a hill. made her scream and me laugh. just fcused on trying to keep my pace and looking for other triathletes to try and catch up to.
What would you do differently?:

not much here.
Post race
Warm down:

grabbed 2 water bottles and waited for my wife to finish. headed over to the ONE tent and drank a few (or more) beers

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the wind

Event comments:

awesome race and the best post-race party ever. tons of beer, live band, and great times. I will do this race again!

Course: because of the high winds (35-40mph), there were a lot of waves. they couldn't get the triangle bouys out into the surf and probably couldn't get the lifeguards on SUP boards and kayaks out there either. the swim became a run down the beach to the farthest bouy and then an in-water run/swim/dolphin dive. I ran as the water was never more than waist high with the waves.

Congrats on a great race!
Bummer that you didn't get to swim though...

And yes, hands-down the best post race party ever!
I've had some epic good-times down there for that race.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.
