Subject: Caffeine or NO?

I've been doing a lot of research on caffeine & athletic performance lately & was wondering what are people's actual opinions & experiences using caffeine during training/racing?

I drink some on my off days, but haven't been using caffeine on my training days.  I'm actually wondering if that's effecting my performance negatively?

The stuff on BT is actually pretty good & current if you're interested & here's some more:

Caffeine may reduce performance

Caffeine increases energy uptake

How does Caffeine effect sports performance

A grad student friend of mine did a 20 page paper on the effects of caffeine. I do my best to avoid caffeine during the week and only take it for races or once in a while for hard training rides/runs.

It helps, I have no question about it.

I use caffeine when I race and avoid it completely all other times.  It's impossible to tell whether it really does help my performances but it makes me feel more awake, which can only be a good thing.

As far as the science goes there seems to be evidence to support both sides of the arguments so the reality is that it probably makes little difference whether you use it or not.

On a typical day the only caffeine I have is the minimal amount in decaf coffee and maybe a little bit of chocolate here and there (hey, a girl's gotta live!).  For a while I was avoiding the gels with caffeine because I was worried that it would make me feel jittery, but I also started reading about the positive effects of caffeine for athletes, so I tried one on a training day.  I felt great and definitely had a burst of energy.  Since then, I have used caffeine in a race as well, with no ill effects and a huge burst of energy soon after I took it.

When I get up to run at 4:00 to run, I wait until later for coffee. When I wake up at 7:00, I have coffee, take care of 'business' and then run. I'm not concerned at all about performance. My one and only consideration is #2.

For me if I start off with caffeine I feel crappy but if I have something with caffeine an hour into it I notice a benefit

I don't personally take any, because I'm hypersensitive to it.  But from what I've seen of the studies, the amounts that have been shown to be effective for boosting athletic performance) are REALLY high, a lot more than what a cup of coffee contains.

For me, the pre-race caffeine is as much a mental boost as a physical one. I want to be "up" and focused, and drinking a cup of coffee helps me with that. Then again, I'm a huge believer in the power of placebo across the board - I figure, if I think it works, it works!

ETA: For those worried about the jitters, drink/consume caffeine paired with guarana (or whatever that stuff is!) It is found naturally in green tea, and added to other stuff. Gives you the caffeine "high" without the jitters.

I don't use it for training purposes at all, but if I ever have to give up my two cups-o-joe in the morning, I might consider ending everything right then and there

I use it only on race day versus using it on a daily basis. I have read that if you use it daily it will not be as effective as if you dont use it too often.

enjoy

I kicked my caffeine "jones" ~3 years ago and feel A LOT better as a result. My daytime energy level is, well, much more "level". No more peaks and valleys.

That said, I do use caffeine before races and during long workouts. I feel it helps and suffer no GI issues as a result.

I can't survive without it ... I'm on my second pot by 9am. Then again I'm generally out the door to the office by 4:30am. Lol, I think I'm an addict!

Coffee makes me really sick. So I generally avoid caffeine, with the exception of chocolate, green tea and the very occasional soda. But I've used the GUs that have caffeine in them (though not the espresso ones that have more, or whatever), and I don't really notice a difference between those and the ones that don't have caffeine - and they don't seem to bother me.

This is a question?

I think it more or less depends on a persons personal preference.  There have been studies that go one way or the other, with some suprising corrleations between say a shot (or double) of espresso before a short distance race, say a 20k TT or a sprint tri.

 Do what's comfortable for you.

If I am going to train, I need to be awake. To be awake, I need caffeine. It's that simple.

If it's a morning run, no coffee - just a hammergel with caffeine in it. Maybe an iced latte (skim milk, no sugar) afterwards as a reward. I definitely use the caffeinated hammergels during racing, but not all the way through - I'll alternate with noncaff.

I actually gave up caffeine for about eight months...and then I fell off the wagon and have been indulging ever since. I have one strong latte in the am no matter what, and use gels both with and without caffeine depending on how I am feeling that day. I really like my coffee and figure life is too short!!!

I'm the same way, except change the times to 6:30am and 10am or later. If I'm having trouble waking up during my early morning workout (since I am not a morning person at all) I'll have a Gu with some caffeine in it. I've learned the hard way about drinking a cup of coffee/espresso and then working out right after.

The only Gu I buy is the Gu with caffeine in it, since those are the only flavors I like. And I only like Gu. I haven't had any noticeable detrimental effects from it.

Wow, great comments!

I think, however I still don't have a consensus.  I'm gonna try both ways.

Caffeinated & Decaff.

We'll see how it goes.

Thanks, everyone for weighing in!

I have my AM workout at the club and then grab a nice hot cup of Joe on my way out the door. I'm not sure how it affects performance on racing and training, but my co-workers definately appreciate it! :-)
