Subject: OWS and Parasites

I am looking forward to my first OWS next season and started wondering about parasites.  I was taught as a child that one of the basic rules of camping was to never drink the water from a river or a lake due to illnesses caused by parasites.

From what I've been reading it sounds like there is a good chance of swallowing some water while swimming in open water especially during a race.  Has anyone ever gotten ill from ingesting lake water while doing an OWS due to parasites?  If so, is there any way to prevent it (apart from not breathing )?

Good point, there are little critters called giardia that are present in fresh waters, ie streams, rivers and lakes. These can make you ill with fever and large amts of diarreha. Mostly very common in people who drink h2o from fresh water sources. These are usually cleared up with antibiotic type medicine and is actually quiet commonSurprised

don't breathe.
Seriousley though, this is not something i would put much thought into.
The water that comes from your tap is probably equal too or worse than whats in the lake.
Try your best not to down any, but ive downed lake water, pool water, ocean water and im still here typing this.

There's a difference in swallowing some water and drinking the water.  Maybe it could happen, but I'd be willing to bet the chance of you getting some infectious disease from a little lake water is quite slim.

Considering the amount of people on here that do OWS frequently, and how little we seem to hear about people getting sick, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Yeah, you might swallow a mouthfull of lake water, but you're not drinking glasses of it...

in the summer months i swim in the LI sound and Norwalk Harbor 3 times a week, i have never gotten sick, and that might be some of the worse water on the planet, now when my children are born and the have a 5th limb or 3rd eye, i will start to worry, but i think you will be ok in the fresh water. Can't be worse than eating at Mcdonalds or Burger King.

Usually the town would do weekly sampling/testing of the water.  When "bacterial count" is high, they would close of the beach/lake.

I swim in pretty gross water at times in the summer - imagine having to negivate through a tropical rain forest-like weed area that goes 40 ft wide.  Swallow plently, and even get a swimmers' rash, yes from whatever microbes hanging onto the skin.  But never get sick from it.

In my hometown I swam in a spring-fed lake, it is the absolute dirtiest thing you will ever see on some days. There is a huge sandbar in the center of it that has turned white from seagull shiiiiit!

One day when the water was hot, i went for a swim and stirred up the bottom of the shallow beach and swam around in the murky water.....for 4 hours after my swim i had swimmers itch, it was the most brutal mind punishing experience.....i had to go for a bike ride to ignore it.

But my point is, when i swim here my nose runs like crazy probably from the bacteria in the water, but i have "never" gotten sick from the water, just a sore stomach from swallowing quite a bit. My hometown triathlon is held here every July, no one has complained.  Even with a lakebed that dirty, your immune system is usually strong enough, as specially as an athlete.

Are you talking about Marathon (FL Keys) or the UK?

To the TS, I wouldn't worry about it all that much. They do close some of the beaches around here in the Winter due to the high amount of run-off.

I'm more afraid of getting hit by boats than about any thing.

Parasites will help keep your weight in check. Win-Freakin-Win as Peter Griffin would say.

I was also raised on never-drink-the-water, but as others have pointed out, you aren't downing huge portions. Most of what gets in your mouth you spit right back out again, and the tiny amount you swallow isn't that much. If you are really concerned, drink a LOT of (clean) water before and after so you, um, eliminate any critters.

I'm not worried about ingesting a few wee beasties.  Even with the water quality in New Jersey, it's not like I'm swimming in the Ganges.  I am actually more worried about the pool at the YMCA.  I swallow so much pool water, I'm afraid I'm going to pass chlorine tablets like kidney stones.

If your swimming in a lake that is in a low developed area then it is relatively clean. I can tell you all urban/suburban lakes accept runoff from drainage systems, which of coarse accept pesticides, fecies, and other bacteria. Depending on the size of the lake, most of the pollution runoff has settled to the bottom. Don't swim right after storms.

Unfortunately the conventional wisdom is to not drink out of a water hose now either.  But, somehow, we all survived.

I wouldn't worry about it.  Just swim and practice sighting.  Parasites should be the least of your concerns.  And always wear a bright swim cap and bring a buddy!

The brain-eating amoeba is your friend.

My first tri (and first OWS) was in a lake in Austin. Brain-eating amoeba were present in some Austin lakes that summer so we were warned about them before hand. Apparently they only eat your brain if you inhale water through your nose. Half way through the swim, guess what I did? Yep, I inhaled the water through my nose. My first thought was brain-eating amoeba! Then my next thought was, well, I won't die for a few weeks, might as well finish the race and die a triathlete. Needless to say I didn't die and I am pretty sure the amoeba didn't eat my brain.

I think the easiest solution is to just not swallow the water!

There have been a few BTers over last few years who have reported they have gotten sick from ows. Worst one I recall was someone got sick from a tri in NYC and they were sick for about a year after wards trying to get over what they picked up.

Risk is low but the reward is great.
