I am going to resign effective Dec. 31st. I have been unhappy for the last year. The mental stress is unberable. I am quitting without another job lined up, three kids, two car payments, mortgage and a school loan. I guess I'll go to Walmart for now........very stressed.....

As much as I like or dislike my job, I always tell myself that it's just that. A job. A paycheck. A means to and end. No matter how much stress I build up during the day, it's nothing I can't resolve with a run after work, or two minutes with my little girl.

Don't do anything you'll regret.

Wifey works, and has our insurance, but I make 60% of our budget. I don't think I will regret leaving a boss that is literally and admittedly mentally ill. How's that for working conditions?

Yes, anything would be an improvement, other than the $$. It's the only thing that has kept me here this long. I have found out the hard way that $$ isn't everything. (but it sure does help pay the bills)

If you are single and otherwise unencumbered, I'd say, go to Cali. Don't worry about your bosses, they'll find someone else, gauranteed.

Oh I'm sure they will.  But its just that unlike you I really like my  job.  Just don't like Long Island.  I'm sure it will all come together in early jan.  I don't see companies, in my field, hiring at this time right now. Just to many holidays.

I am with Run4urlif...it's a paycheck...if it was fun all of the time, they wouldn't have to pay us...I have always defended staying at 'less than comfortable' employment situations that my eight (10, 12) hours ther, pays for all of the hours I don't have to be there.  Be careful what you wish for...not a lot of Wal Mart employees bragging about their paychecks, while they welcome us with a smile...

for what it's worth

Disclaimer.......I don't know anything about you, your job or your life's situation other than what you have offered here.....

...so take this advise with a grain of salt. On one hand, you know that your present situation seems intolerable but you are leaving without much of a backup plan. You are giving yourself 5 weeks to develope one which is good. In the meantime, have you considered just taking a week off from work (vacation) to kind of give yourself some breathing room and determine if your present situation is really as desperate as you seem to believe. It will also give you a chance to consider other options and maybe working on some resumes without trying to balance work and homelife at the same time.

Just a thought from a guy who has made a mid-life career change once already and is hoping for another.....

Either way, best of luck to you. I hope that things will work out well for you and your family.

I quit a job where I made double what I currently make. It was the best descission I could have made. I love what I do now, and I couldn't imagine spending 40+ hours a week doing something I didn't enjoy!
Do what you need to do to be happy!! I salute you for your courage and wish you the best of luck.

I don't think change is bad, I just lean towards security, esp. if there's a family involved. Back-up plans are always good.

Something else I don't think anyone has mentioned is that a frank conversaiton with an HR type is probably in order.

I don't think I will regret leaving a boss that is literally and admittedly mentally ill. How's that for working conditions?

I stayed in a work environment like that for three years (it took my boss commiting suicide to get me out).  I can tell you what will happen if you DON'T leave.  I know the financial picture might be scary, but your mental sanity comes first.  You owe it to your wife and kids to be a sane person   It is just a job.  The money somehow always seems to work itself out.

A vendor once told me, "They can't eat you."  He was an older gentleman mid 60s and had owned several businesses in his life.  Sometimes when I'm afraid to take risks because of a possible negative financial impact I just remind myself that they can't eat me

I really like that.

Good luck with whatever you do. Like they say though, no one is ever lying on their death bed thikning "if only I had worked more". Especially if it makes you miserable.

Wow, thanks for the support. I do have a bit of a contingency plan. I have an uncle that owns a construction company and they always need laborers. So I will be fine in the short term. I just have always been a white collar guy since graduating college, so I'd be going back to my high-school, college grunt work roots. Not somehting I want to do for a career, but I will welcome the mental break.

I once quit a soulless corporate job that paid me more than twice what I make now and included a house, a staff, a car and a gym membership (expatriate living is surreal). I'd tried to do it from five years, to store up, but gave up after 2.5 because I was so unhappy. I didn't have my son at the time, but it was still scary. I just threw myself into what I loved, went back to school and let serendipity do its thing, as it does when I am happy and align myself with what I believe in.

Being happy is important. Being true to yourself for both you and your family even more so. You will need to be creative and resourceful, probably cut living expenses way down, but you can. Good luck!
