Subject: I'll accept the nomination for "idiot of the day" for yesterday

I've been secretly trying to figure out what was so wrong with me that I'm biking at a snail's pace, sweating my left jewel off and getting no where.  I'm thinking that I'm not so totally out of shape schlub, what's going on?  I was passing it off as "I haven't gotten my bike legs yet."

So last night, I get on the bike and my garage sale trainer (bought for $125 in an unopened box at a church sale in October).  I hit a button and notice this tiny display on a sub-secondary screen "5%".  That's odd, so I look closer and figure out that this is the incline for the resistance.

I then wasted about 8 minutes figuring out how to change this number.  Finally, I change the setting to "0%".  Legs darn near fell of as I had been in such a high gear and not back wheel barely moving to suddenly basically free-wheeling at 29.8 mph.

So needless to say, last night's bike ride a lot more fun.

I've done the same on a treadmill. Ran my normal pace but it sure was a lot harder for "some reason".

that's why it's a bad idea to compare trainer miles to road miles

Ready my "blond moment" and it will make you feel better

I was out for a long run after work. It was approaching dusk...there was still a good amount of light in the sky. After about 90 minutes of running it was getting really dark. It went from sunset to pitch black, I couldn't see anything. It was getting so dark that I was actually getting concerned about my night vision. At the end of the run I actually had to walk at certain spots because I couldn't see the road in front of me and I'm prone to falling.

Then I took my sunglasses off.

I was having a real bad ride last year. I was 25 miles out and I was about to call my wife to come get me as I didn't think I could make it back home. When I stopped and got off my bike to call I noticed a brake pad was dragging. Sucker was perfectly aligned and not making a sound as I rode.

What kind of trainer do you have that has a digital incline/resistance setting?

Oh man... like the time I rode to the bike shop and though, "Dang... I just can't get it out of the low gears today."  When I got there, I realized I was stuck in my big chain ring, but the computer wasn't registering it.  Der.

Oh, yeah... that happened to me, sorta.   We went for a short day-hike at Hetch Hetchy, where we had to go through a pretty long, damp tunnel.  About halfway through, I had to grab Eric's hand to keep myself from freaking out about the dark (I get claustrophobic sometimes).  I was seriously scared.  It wasn't until we made it out the other side that I'd realized I'd worn my sunglasses the whole way.  Der.

I guess I can put my experience in for the vote:

I was racing at a local event and the bike course has three VERY nasty hills back to back.  Short, but over 15%.  I was SO concerned about making sure I got in the right gear on the back wheel that I actually looked down to make sure I was in the big ring on the cassette.  I tackled the hills and just about exploded - I was zapped by the time I got to the top - the hills NEVER felt that hard before....

I looked down and realized I never got out of the big ring in the front because I was so concerned with the back.  It took me about 10 minutes of easier spinning just to recover.

Dumb.....

P.S. this is good, but doesn't come close to the sunglasses at night story - classic!

I ran an extra mile at a race once, because I missed the turn in the trail.  Turns out, I must have stepped right over the yellow tape, because it was very clearly marked (according to other people). I suspect it was where some guy was off in the bushes to the side getting rid of some excess fluid.

Sad part is I took several people with me.

You had that Corey Hart 80's tune in your head at the same time, too, didn't ya?
