Veteran 172 Mansfield, TX | Subject: IMKY Athlete Tracking IMKY will be the first race my wife and kids will experience. We are making a week road trip of it (kids are excited to miss the 1st week of school). I am very excited to have them see Triathlon on such a large scale and hope that it will be a special experiance for them. How can they track my progress throughout the day? I've heard people mention e-mail updates and/or text msg updates. Any insight would be much appriciated. |

Expert 924 Louisville, KY | Subject: RE: IMKY Athlete Tracking I really don't have a clue about automatic email or txt updates. However, your family can have somebody track you from ironmanlive.com and manually send them updates. Just as a note, the little town of LaGrange, which we will pass through twice on the bike course has an "Ironman Festival", which might be something for your family to look into. I'm sure its a long day as a spectator, so it might give them sometime to do for a little while anyway. |

Veteran 306 Dallas | Subject: RE: IMKY Athlete Tracking Yep, Ironman Live Tracking I think is the only way. I will say, I ran in the Houston Marathon last January, and a friend ran in the Boston Marathon. Those two races each had the email or text message updates, and they did NOT work. And as I think about it, I did Ironman 70.3 Hawaii last year and those email alerts didn't work well either. So, Ironman Live is the way to go. |

Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: RE: IMKY Athlete Tracking That's a good guestion and one I've been mulling over. Triathlons are not exactly popular spectator sports. You see your guy jump in the water and then you don't see them again for another hour and a half. Then you see him run through T1 and then he's gone for the next 5 to 7 hours! Then you catch a glimps of him in T2 and he's gone again. My plan is to have my family at T1 about 8:30 to see me come out of the water and head out on the bike. Then they can go do something - go to a musuem or whatever - for the day. We'll bring a laptop and the Galt House has free wireless so they can get an idea of where I'm at on the bike. I've not looked into text messaging but that's probably a good idea. ~Mike |

If they can track on you on Ironmanlive.com, that's the best way to go. Maybe a phone upgrade is in order? I almost got a Blackberry just so my family and friends would have internet connection during the day. Luckily my boyfriend has one through work so he'll be using his phone. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: IMKY Athlete Tracking You could try this...http://www.myathlete.biz/I used it at IMLP. Due to the rural location, being a tier 4 cellular area, and constant rain mine didn't work.Folks are great, and the concept is super.I did get two nasty skin abrasions from the unit on my back. All in all I would try it again in the future if my family had access to cell with internet plus folks not at the race can track me. |

Expert 749 | Subject: RE: IMKY Athlete Tracking The LaGrange Festival says they will have athlete tracking stations, I assume that means computers. My fam. is going to come to the swim finish, go have b'fast, take the bus out to LaGrange for the afternoon to play, bus back in, see me start the run, go for a nice long dinner & maybe stop off at the hotel to chill out in the pool for a bit, then head to the run course to see me finish. I'm such a bedtime nut that I have it in my mind that I need to finish early so my kids can get back to the hotel to get to bed . . . In theory it's a good plan - extreme heat or rain might put a kink in that. |

I just have to pick it up at the race site. I am now hoping it isn't painful to wear! I don't see why i couldn't just stuff it in a jersey-pocket, though. I think this will be great to have, particularly for my wife who will be taking care of our young daughter (needing naps and snacks and such), so that she'll have a much better chance of seeing me throughout the day. Besides that, my family and friends are scattered throughout the country and will all enjoy being able to see my pace/distance/etc updated constantly. ~B |

Veteran 321 Georgia | Subject: RE: IMKY Athlete Tracking At IMFL last year, and several other races, a company did a text message checkpoint tracking for free connected to your timing chip. I remember going online and registering my race number and several phone numbers for family and friends to which they received texts throughout the day alerting them where I was on the course - swim finish, mid-bike, bike finish, mid-run, finish. I cannot seem to find anything on this, does anyone else remember/have info? I have no idea whether they will offer this at IMKY, though. FYI, I gave out copies of the course maps and marked with my estimated times and the time of day I expected to be at various points on the map, which seemed to work well. Andy said that he would check to see if they had enough units for IMKY and would be getting back to me. Haven't heard back from him yet, but I'm still holding out hope that I'll be able to get one. |

Good idea Karen. You can carry a Blackberry with you on the race to see how you are doing! ;-)
