Subject: Traverse City RIdes?
Here I am in Traverse City for three days and looking for somewhere to ride for about 20 miles or so. I'm staying south of the city on 31/Division St (Baymont Suites) and don't have a the ability to drive to a route.

31 south looks to have a shoulder but it also looks like its busy/highway-ish. I can find my way to the TART path, but don't know if that is appropriate for riding hard/fast. The front desk clerk was supremely unhelpful in this matter, telling me people ride bikes on the path but she had never actually been on it herself.

Any routes I can get to? Is the TART okay for a road bike? Is 31 heading out town to the south horrible?

Help!!

Check these guys out tonight, they'll hook you up with good ride routes:

http://www.cherrycapitalcyclingclub.org/content.aspx?page_id=87&club_id=87045&item_id=80668

High speed on the TART is not very advisable, just too much family/leisure type traffic.

The Wednesday night ride up the west side of the bay is supposed to be pretty good too.

Hey Kim...I'd be pretty nervous about 31 south...if I'm remembering right, that shoulder runs out a little further south and it is a pretty busy and fast road.  I don't think we've ever seen cyclists on it.

And Glen's right about the TART...in town and heading east is really busy with pedestrian traffic and it's not a super wide path.  But if you can get to the TART a little west of town, you can find a few ride options from Darrow Park on mapmyride.  That section of the TART isn't as busy and you're able to cruise at a pretty good pace.

That intersection of 31/37 and S. Airport is pretty tough to navigate anywhere easily by bike.

If you still have my #, feel free to call with questions...or PM me.

If you can leisurely make your way to Old Mission Peninsula via the TART trail you will find some great riding.  If you prefer flat - then stick to the roads along the bays, or if your prefer some climbing then head inland.  If you can get your hands on a map, take Peninsula Dr north, then turn on Bluewater road, across the peninsula and take Bluff road south.  Stay next to the bay via Center road and East Shore Dr.  Your ride will be about 20ish miles.   Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

I found a great route from my hotel, out airport rd to silver to long lake (I think...). Barnes was somewhere in there too (what a hill, especially given my normal route on Belle Isle).

I forgot how much I miss the down hill parts!

Late reply..

Green Hill... I hate that hill. I use to live on Silver Lake and I would ride that hill everyday it was nice. Silver Lake road isn't too bad with the new shoulder.

Glad you found a route and made it safe.

I live off of Silver lake road and I haven't done the Barns hill yet, (and my not ever...).  I really like biking the penninsula, and leelanau county is wonderful, lots of open roads and hills!

Last comment.... if you take the TART trail North it goes into Leelanau county and will turn into dirt. If you go left when it becomes dirt you're on Lake Leelanau rd, one of my favorites to ride.

I have yet to hit that ride around the lake leelanau, I plan to hit that 70 mile ride soon. Are you doing the RAT(Ride Around Torch) July 19th?

Yep, I signed up for the 100 mi, though I'm sure I'll end up regretting it. Which are you doing?

well, I signed up for the 63mile which was going to be on my GT Outpost, now that I have the trek I planned on hitting the 100mile. Still thinking about it, because the Traverse City Tri Training day is the weekend after the RAT... I am wondering if I really want to risk injury.

You've got a week to recover, you'll be fine!

If I'm going down I'm taking you with me...

I'll probably be doing the RAT 100 as well, just hope I can keep up with my fiance.

What will you guys be averaging? Feel like getting a group together?

Prolly pretty slow, will be my first century.

I'll be the jerk that shows up with the tt bike... :P

(It's the bike I'm using for my IM so I'm spending all of my time on it)

I am not sure what my pace will be, this will be my first century. I would like to avg around 17, we shall see if I can do it. This really will be a feeler for me since I am new to cycling with a road bike. I really have not experience riding in a group, all of my training has been solo, but I am up for learning the in's and out's.

We'll have to figure some place to meet up at. This will be my first group century, have only done a solo in the past. I figure the average will be something around 16.5 to 18 MPH for the fiance and I as well.

Hi guys. I am new to BT this season. This thread caught my attention due to the fact that I am in TC every weekend until mid-September. I make the trek from Royal Oak every Thursday or Friday and then head back on Sunday night. Anyway, we are on the SE corner of Lake Leelanau and have some pretty solid roads/paths within a mile or so. I am trying to get out around 8/9, or earlier on Saturday mornings. Please let me know if you would like to meet up for a ride. Thanks!
