Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think I want to get a Garmin. Is the 310XT the one to get? Is anyone selling them as a package deal with HRM and cadence speed sensor? Where is the cheapest place to get either a package or the idividual parts? Kevin |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have not seen any package deals. Heck I have not seen many of the units that are packaged with the HR strap. I would say amazon is one of the better places to find the cadence sensor. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() some good deals to be had on 305s now that the 310 is out. 305 is 10 hr batt, 310 is 15 I think, so if you are doing HIM or less the 305 is great. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=172251&posts=3&highlight=305&highlightmode=1#M2316658 Edited by jbrenneman 2009-07-30 9:59 PM |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got mine at Roadrunnersports.com They had a special on shipping and on there membership. So out pocket for the one without the hr strap was $314. I get it today, I am so excited. I heard the other hr straps work with it, so I didn't get it. I hope it does otherwise I will be ordering that too. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just got my 310XT from Road Runner and have had a chance to run/ride with it. Honestly if you don't have an ANT+ power meter on your bike, it's not really that big a technological leap from the 305 and might not be worth it. The only reason I upgraded was to use my power meter, which the 305 won't talk to. As for the "true multisport" marketing, I don't consider a GPS/HRM that turns into a stopwatch while swimming a true multisport device. If they come up with a way to get the GPS and HRM functions to work reliably in the water, then I'll be impressed, but for now I'm annoyed that they call the device "swim ready" and don't really go out of their way to mention that the features you pay the extra money for won't work on the swim. Overall, though, I'm pleased with what it does do, and the quick release kit works nicely for going between running/biking. |

Can you display interval power, like you can display lap pace with the 305? |

Yup, you can display power, power zone, lap average power, ride average power, max power, and kilojoules for the ride. Not quite as many options at the Edge 705, but plenty for me. |

You'll wait a long time. Well, unless you rewrite physics. A GPS signal (at around 1.3 GHz) is reduced to ~1% of its amplitude (strength) within just over an inch in pure water. Given the natural impurities in any water you might be swimming actually improve conductivity, you might make it up to about 3ft from the water's surface before being at 1%. Still, good luck trying to retain a lock on the satellites with a nearly non-existant signal. Garmin states on their website that it will not collect GPS during the swim. Don't be bitter that you didn't notice. I'm thrilled that it turns into a stopwatch in the water - rather than a brick like the non-waterproof previous model. |

I saw it on the website and I'm not bitter, I just think it's a tad misleading. There's much more "GPS and HR watch for triathlons!" than there is "oh, by the way, GPS and HR don't work for 1/3 of a triathlon." Edited by DrPete 2009-07-31 1:49 PM |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What does the foot pod do? Do I need this to track running pace? I would like to use this while cycling and riding. I realize I need the speed and cadence sensor. Will my polar HR strap work? |

The foot pod is useful as a cadence meter outdoors, or for measuring speed/distance on an indoor track or treadmill. Worth it if you're doing that kind of stuff. |

Doesn't the Polar equivalent track your HR in water? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used my 310XT yesterday in my dress rehearsal for my tri in the open water. As soon as I got in the water, it lost satellite. I swam 1350 yards and when I got out of the water it said my distance was .18 miles. Now I have to explain to my husband why exactly I needed to upgrade from my 405 when this thing doesn't even work in the water!! Oops! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I looked hard at the 310XT when getting my new 305. I just couldn't justify to myself the extra $$$ for not having it in the water. I understand about the GPS in the water thing but my Polar does give me a very accurate HR in the water both in the pool and OWS. It is about 3yrs old and I only got the 305 for the GPS function for my training runs and rides. I like that the 310 is smaller than the 305 but then again it was a cost vs. function thing for me. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Looking at my file from today, the altitude readings are just as wacky on the 310XT as they are on the 305... The last 3 minutes of my run had 1473 feet of elevation gain. ![]() (edit) Nevermind--it's a trainingpeaks.com problem. When I load the file in Garmin Training Center it says I only had 562ft of climbing for my 6.5mi run... that makes a bit more sense. Edited by DrPete 2009-08-01 8:17 AM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I love my 2+ year old 305, but the 20 hour battery life on the 310XT sound great. Water proof sounds also good, but if it looses GPS or if it records your arm going back and forth with every stroke as extra distance (something I heard the other day), then it looses its attractiveness I guess I hope that my 305 wont break for another while |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am soooo glad I read this thread. I was going to upgrade from my 305 because I wanted GPS in the water (I do a lot of OWS). You guys just saved me a big chunk of $ - thanks! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ya know I read online that you can put your 305 in your swim cap and it will work for the swim...says to put it in a small ziploc and then under your swim cap. No idea if that is comfortable or not but it is supposed to work! |
