So many of you probably have heard about the recent seismic activity of Mt. Saint Helens. If not, just open CNN.com, information will be there. The scientists are predicting a 70 percent chance of a minor eruption in the next few days. Seismic activity has been increasing markedly since Sept 23rd (I've seen the recent seismograph measurements here at the University of Washington...the activity started as basically nothing on Sept 22nd, now swarming quakes throughout today!). They are predicting that this will be many times smaller than the 1980 eruption, only affecting a 3 mile radius from the crater, but an eruption nonetheless!!

If anyone is living in Southwestern Washington, and has a digital camera, get them ready!!! If I didn't have so much research to do up here in Seattle, I'd be heading down there for some great pics. If anyone does capture anything on camera, let me know, I'd love to see it!! Who knows, I might blow off work for the weekend and head down there myself.

Just wanted to inform my triathlete friends! We've been having a theme of natural disasters...hurricanes galore and now volcanic activity! I think Mother Nature is less than thrilled with us lately...

Pretty exciting stuff, huh? I hope it erupts just enough to not seriously hurt anyone. ;-)

Oh, by the way, I heard that my good friend, who is a weather geek just like you (she's also a snow hydrologist), is moving to Seattle to work for the National Weather Service. I thought of you when I heard that, I thought you might be funded through NWS or something..... Well, if you hear a thick Southern accent out of a cute, little brunette, say hi! She's a hoot and a half!

Small eruption...Lara, get out that camera! Apparently the wind is going to bring the cloud or some ash your way!!

Sweet! So Jasmine, tell me, would an eruption of this size create it's own weather disturbances the way a large forest fire might?

Dang Lara, bad timing. Kim, this one was small, actually all it did was spew some steam and ash into the air. It only lasted about 10 minutes or so. Because of it's small size, you won't see it affect the weather at all. The ash in the air has dissipated so much already that it's just a hint of a haze. So no cool weather phenomena will occur this time around. But they're thinking that the mountain wants to spew out some of the magma that has been likely building under the dome, so there will be more to come!!

Bummer. You know, I was thinking about how "Austin Powers" made 'mag-ma' one of the best words to say. Steaming hot mag-ma! Ok, Kim's been sitting at a dest with no one to talk to for toooooo long.....

Yeah, Mag-ma. Hehe.

There are tons of news crews outside of my building!!! (Atmos Sci shares the building with Geophysics). They were here only a couple of weeks ago about the hurricanes, and now they're back for volcanoes! ;-)

uuuuggghh huhhhh they said eruption.

This is big stuff people, it's not that often that you get to see the same volcano erupt 2x in your lifetime on the continent that you live on. I wonder if there were any ties to these events with the earthquake we had just last week.

Oh boy, I've got water front property here soon!!!

The IMAZ won't be called that anymore, you may now call it the WCIM (west coast iron man).

Especially a continent not known for lots of recent volcanic activity too. Well, at least that far north... I wish we had volcanoes on the East Coast. Heck we hardly have real mountains. Plenty of bike hills, but a serious lack of "make you go OMIGOD" mountains.

Well, it wasn't technically an "eruption"...yet. Just a small "explosion" of steam and ash. It's yet to be seen if an official eruption will occur...to be continued.

Volcanos are awesome...what more can one say. If you get some good pictures when it does actually erupt please post them. In phoenix we are sheltered from most of natures power...except drought.

Here are some pics I ftp'd from the UW Geology department of Friday's eruptive burp. Today there was more steam let go, but then they detected seismic activity that they decided was likely magmatic, and evacuated a larger area around the mountain. Expecting a larger, explosive eruption soon!!

Just along these lines - Mauna Loa in Hawaii which last erupted in 1984 is gettin' busy too.

0540 October 4
Monday morning sees no changes at Mauna Loa. Since early July 2004, an increased number of earthquakes has been recorded from beneath Mauna Loa. From week to week, the numbers fluctuate but remain well above the norm. During the past week, however, only 23 earthquakes were located under the summit. Through September, more than 580 earthquakes were centered beneath Mauna Loa’s summit caldera and the adjacent part of the southwest rift zone. Most of these earthquakes are quite deep, from 35 to 50 km below the ground surface and small, less than magnitude 3. They are "long-period" (LP) earthquakes, which means that their signals gradually rise out of the background rather than appearing abruptly. Such a concentrated number of deep LP earthquakes from this part of Mauna Loa is unprecedented, at least in our modern earthquake record dating back to the 1960s.

Cool! Activity everywhere!

More activity in St. Helens. The largest release of steam occurred today at 9:30 am PT. They are still expecting an explosive eruption, although they think they're a 30% chance the mountain will just go back to sleep. I almost headed down there this weekend, but after finding out that 3,000 other people had the same idea, I decided to stay put and watch it on TV. Harmonic tremors are still occurring which usually indicates magma flowing into the volcano. I'll keep everyone updated! Here's a pic from this morning's little burp:
