I have a trashcan in the situation below.  It's too heavy for me to lift and is filled with dirt and weeds.  I'd like some advice on how I can leverage it to stand properly without having to empty it or with help from other people.

There are no trees around to tie a rope to, and the trashcan is round so if you kept rolling it, it will eventually fall off that 3 inch platform.

Well...what do you have availible to you?  You could get a few 2x4's or some other similar material and make a triangle.  Put it against the edge of the platform, so when you roll the trash can, the top hits the ramp and starts rolling up it.  The shallower the incline, the easier it is to push it up the ramp and thus get it upright.

Call over the neighbor kids and wave a $10 bill to the first kid who can stand it up without dumping the contents.  Cheaper than a visit to the chiropractor.

I like Matt's idea.  I'll look around for some pieces of wood I can use.

And I'll use Max's idea as a backup if I can't get the stupid thing up the ramp I try to build.

I'm thnking too that you could tie a rope around it and the other end to the car.  Put a 2x4 block under the section that's on the ground so it won't drag, and slowly pull it vertical.

OK, so it's been 26 hours...how did you do it?  Or is it still sitting there?  LOL

It's still sitting there. I didn't have any wood so I called a buddy over and we tried to move it, but still, it was too heavy. I guess I might have to empty it.

EDIT****If anyone remembers the weeds thread, this is the backyard after I weed wacked everything.  I used one of those string wackers and systematically dug up every freaking weed root.  What a pain in the arse.  The yellow grass is what's left.

Can you maybe turn the garbage can over some how so that the wheels are on the bottom facing the bricks.  Then just stand it on the level below the brick retaining-wall thing if that is where you want it.

Put a big wedge under the end of the can that rests on the ground so that it won't move, but the can could still tip backwards. Tie a rope to the top bar of the can on the back side. rig up a pully system on the doorknob to the left of the picture, and set up a 2:1 or 3:1 pulley system. Even a simply 2:1 where you just run the rope through a pulley at the door frame should let you and a buddy pull on the rope with better leverage than just trying to tip the can upright.

A 3:1 system is constructed by tying a prussick knot on the rope near the end of the garbage can with another pulley on it, making a "Z" system.

Find a local climber, caver or kayaker to come over and set it up.

But here's the next question. If it's too heavy to even tip it upright, how are you going to move it once it's upright? (You'll have to tip it again partway to get it to roll).

Oceanannie, my buddy and I couldn't even turn the trashcan. We could only wobble it.

AdvendureBear, I wish I knew half of what you said because it sounds like a really cool idea. Unfortunately, I don't know anybody that does where I live that would set it up. On the side note, I moved that trashcan on the top level, inch by inch so once it's up right, I can move it.

The thing was, I lead the trashcan down the stairs by pulling it so that I can slowly bring it down, step by step. If the trashcan went down first, I was afraid I couldn't hold it steady and it might just quickly roll down the stairs. It was working, and I got it down to the bottom level, but when I tried to upright it, I didn't account for the unevenness of the floor, and I tried to hold it up, but ended up tipping it forward. Maybe that wasn't the smartest thing afterall.

Do you have access to a dolly? Like the ones that they use to haul around refrigerators and such? Maybe you could borrow one from someone...I have one, but the distance is tough.

In the last 36 hours you could have emptied it with a shovel, stood it up, refilled it, moved it to the site, emptied it again, taken the wife out for a carbo load dinner, done a 1/2 Ironman, gotten 8 hours sleep.

I think you're slacking off there buddy!

Is that a bottle of endurox I see sitting next to the bricks? Maybe just have a few glasses of that and see what happens.

oo ooo ooo.  Stand on the axle of the wheels, hold onto the handle and lean back as far as you can.  Gettin up close to the can and then launching yourself backwards might give you the momentum to get upright.  Make sure to tape it, as even if it doesn't work, it robably would be worth posting.

Yeah especially if it continues on over, falls on you and traps you beneath. This was going to be my suggestion as this is how we used to raise ladders during Firefighter training.

I did try Matt's idea of standing on the wheel area and giving it a pull, but it's too heavy.

In any case, it's starting to rain and there's going to be pretty big storm coming in tonight at about 1" of rain.  Going to have to wait on any attempts for a day or two.

Well this will take longer than emptying it and refilling it but If you want to be creative put a car jack under it and lift it when you get it as high as you can block it and then jack it again repeat as necessary do not get your head or body between the trash can and the ground.

The equation for this physics problem is
(C4)+det cord(primer/batt)= no problem.
To solve for amount of C4 refer to FM**** "Charge Tables"
