Why am I not surprised you find that amusing.

You know the same thing happens in the U.S. -- guys who can legally purchase weapons go buy guns, then sell them for a profit to gangbangers and other ne'er do wells who scratch the serial numbers off then go use them to kill people and rob people and rape people. Yeah, that's funny sh*t! Where's my ROFL emoticon?

Wow I have bought guns for 30 years now.  I have never sold one to a gang banger.  So how much profit does one make when he drops $700+ at a gun strore for a Sig or F&N or any nice weapon?  Seems making a profit means you sell them for more.  Well here in Flint (you can look it up) we have shootings.  In fact we are rated the most violent place in the USA, because we have shootings.  The guns on the street are cheap and are stolen.

Then again what else should I expect out of you, Rosie

``In their study, U. of C. researchers combed through gun-trace data to determine the weapons most likely bought by straw purchasers. Those are people without criminal records who buy guns for felons — often at a hefty markup.''

I guess I don't find humor in `shuffling' guns to prevent the government from knowing who has which guns.

I guess I don't find humor in `shuffling' guns to prevent the government from knowing who has which guns.

The main thing preventing the government from knowing who has which guns is the law: "After winning a majority, the Tories passed a law this past spring to officially stop the registry and ordered the data destroyed."

Why read the article and keep the topic on discussion when you can  turn it into an opportunity to bash American gun owners?

If the government followed the law and destroyed the data it was supposed to because the database is no longer legal, this wouldn't be near as much an issue, nor would there be anything to be ironic/amusing.

If you're going to get all huffy about those who break the law, shouldn't you keep consistent and get huffy about the government in this case?

I understand that. So why shuffle the guns? If the anti-gun crowd gets its way and the data is kept on file, then why not follow the letter of the law? Again, that's if the data isn't destroyed. If it is destroyed, which it looks like it will be, then they have nothing to worry about. I just don't understand their reasoning. And I certainly don't find what's amusing about it.

From your article.

"But straw purchasing cases are rare compared to cases involving illegal gun possession and other types of firearm offenses."

Authorities should have a paper trail to find out who purchased the guns, why no prosecution?

I think the article by the OP does have some humor, none of it was in reference to anyone doing anything illegal or providing guns for criminals. It was the people acting in a manner to protect tehemselves when entities in the government tried to by-pass a law that was passed to destroy the gun registration information.

Maybe you think it's okay for governments to ignore laws? Or maybe you think citizens excercizing the limited freedoms they have is bad?

I don't understand how they aren't following the letter of the law (that is no longer).  Regardless, let's change the possession to Hustler magazines.  Previously the ultra-conservative government needed to maintain a list of all Hustler magazine owners, because ... well ... you know.  New government comes in and says it's just silly - repeals maintenance of list and orders it destroyed.  Ultra-conservative faction of government (or a city) files a lawsuit seeking to maintain the list for it's own purposes, because ... well ... you know.  Hustler magazine owners just trade them around, very legally, so the list is meaningless and as a poke in the eye to the ultra-conversative faction of government.

I think that's sort of funny.  I have no problem with guns or Hustler magazines.

eta quotation marks from Tony's article

Neither of those statements is true -- I have no problem with people exercising the freedoms they have and I certainly don't think it's OK for the government to ignore the law.

And neither is happening in this case.

While in the U.S. we have the second amendment that gives us a Constitutional right to bear arms, they are not governed by such a document in CANADA, WHICH IS A DIFFERENT COUNTRY! So the question is, do they have a right in Canada to bear arms, or is that a privilege afforded them by the government? The latter, because, again, they're not part of the U.S. where we have a right to bear arms and they have no Constitution affording them such a right. I guess if you want to say that swapping guns is exercising a freedom, well then OK, that's fine, but I don't really see the point, and again don't find it amusing. And frankly, the government isn't preventing them from doing it.

So is the government ignoring the law, as you said? No, because it clearly states in the article that there is opposition within the government of Quebec, which is a singular province, to destroying the database and it may, however unlikely, not be destroyed after an injunction was filed to prevent it from being lost forever.

Now, that's not the government ignoring the law. That's called due process. As I said, if it's found that the database should be destroyed, great, problem solved for everybody. If it isn't destroyed, then so be it, problem also solved.
