So I am watching the Fast and Furious (the 3rd one, actually), and they are at a pre-race party.  You know, where people show off their cars and stuff.   It got me thinking,

Do they actually exist?  Has anyone been to one of these?  How would one find out where these things are held?

They do. I have. There are some pretty sweet rides out there. And some real crapboxes. It's rarely a good time unless you like a bunch of 16-year-olds thinking their HOnda with a fartcan muffler is fast and hot-rodding up and down the street.

The turd one is actually "The Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift"   Its the "george lanzby" of the series as its not really talked about.  Vin only makes a brief appearance at the end which is the only tie between this and the other 4 (soon to be 5)  I dont recall them even referring to him as Dom, just a fugitive w/ an american muscle car.

So I assume you meant the 4th (as I cant see why you would admit to watching TD as I am having a hard enough time correcting you)

You're welcome for the very trivial information

Oh, don't ever take me seriously either! I don't have a smartazz filter in real life or the interwebz! What I was getting at is that I think one of the previous postees might have, just possibly, been an MR2 pilot. Not a Honda fan either, apparently. Laughing

HEY HEY HEY NOW! MR2s are the bom-diggity. It was such a fun car. Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive go-kart with too much power and not enough weight. It could sure take the twisties, though. Sigh. I miss that car.

They do but it's not nearly as glamorous as they show it.  If any females do show up, it's a safe bet that they won't be scantily clad like the ones in the movies.  It's no "Party" it is just where everybody meets up where the bets and match-ups are made.  Often times the race doesn't even happen there.  It's not just ricers, you'll see domestics, imports, European cars and any combination that is fast, it doesn't matter how.

Those movies did more to ruin the import scene and glorify all the "Ricer mods" than anything.

Incidentally, a buddy of mine was a stuntman in the Miami one and the newest one.  He's a white guy if my screen name threw you off.  LOL

There is a pretty regular meet up around where I live. Have a friend who used to go all the time. I never went mostly because the cops definitely knew about it and it was only a matter of when they were going to show up and start chasing people around. I like my car and wasn't interested in beating it up while running away from the cops so I abstained.

Not to say there weren't a few races on empty country roads back in the day.

I used to go to the local drag strip, more fun and legal.

Some of the really tricked out ones are amazing...

And yeah, you always see the honda with new muffler and MAYBE the smaller tires and think it's ready for street racing.

The cars are for real.  All the uber hotties with belts worn as skirts or aisian hotties dressed as school girls?  Not as prevelant.

In all honesty, I think the FIRST movie was pretty good.  It had some substance.

The second?  Terrible.  If you took a drink every time Paul or Tyrees say "bro" you would be trashed half way through.

Tokyo drift?  Yuck -  total recasting

Four?  Blech

Five?  Sort of entertaining, but they "physics" of carting that bank vault behind two cars and the the cable not breaking or the frame not getting ripped apart as the vault is going through buildings is SO absurd, it's nauseating.

But crazy thing is, I will watch each one, at least once.  (mostly for the hotties!)

Like someone mentioned, cruise-ins/meets similar to that do exist, but they are generally lower key and less glamorous than the Hollywood version.  I go to 1-2 a month where I live, and there can be turnouts with over 300 cars.  The cars that show up vary depending on which meet it is, but across the specturm you'll run into everything from classics to muscle cars to modern american to imports to exotics.  "Cars and coffee" is probably the widest known casual meet, but there are certainly others depending on the level of interest where you live.  Local car enthusiast forums are probably the best source on where to find them.
