Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I caught up with my DVR this week, and watched the premiere, hoping for something to fill the emptiness left by Battlestar Galactia's end. I had mixed feelings. Mrs. gearboy was not a fan, stating "isn't this the same as BSG?" (I had to point out that in BSG the villains were cybernetic, not alien, and a lot of it took place in space, so there). I thought the primary characters were too broadly/cartoonly depicted, with too much black and white and not enough gray. The only character that was really interesting to me was the leader of the bikers - he was making better use overall of his resources, and I thought had a better read on the whole situation with the aliens than Noah Wyle's character. I'm hoping they find a better footing soon. Walking Dead did a better job with the characters from the get go in the post-apocalyptic world, but then they had source material to work with. Anyone else catch the show and have an opinion? (What, opinions on COJ? Who knew?) |

Felt the exact same way as you. It has potential and, IMO, Walking Dead sort of set a new bar for making a show compelling from the start. Hopefully we start to know and like/dislike some of the characters more as the show progresses. At the least, it will be decent fodder while on the trainer! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I thought they did a good (not great) job. I agree they do need to flesh it out a bit more. I did enjoy the conflict/tension between the father and middle son about getting the older brother back. I think once they get some of the back story filled in it will be better. I do hope they don't fall into the gratuitous lezbo stuff like BSG and SGU. If the story warrants it fine, but don't throw it in for giggles. |

It seemed like they would cut to commercial after each scene. I have last night's episode on DVR, for watching later, but it would not surprise me. The premiere which was supposed to be with "limited commercial interuptions" had breaks every 10-15 minutes, like any other show. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I liked it,, but I'll admit i was also multitasking while watching it. It seems just good enough to DVR but not good enough to be upset if I miss something |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I thought it was okay, I'm not especially excited though it'd be interesting to catch up on at some point. According to The Man (who loves watching real UFO, ancient alien, etc.) the actual military strategy would be to disperse and break into small groups, retreat for survival in the invasion situation where our species is erradicated...I thought it interesting that Falling Skies is following that format instead of the Independence Day or Battle LA example. Too many commercial breaks and annoyed by the "BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE TO COME". |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got the impression that the actual military had been destroyed, and the resistance pockets were actually more like emergent draftees. So there would be less of an actual strategic plan of dispersal and more of a "well, that's all we can do" It is more or less like Stephen Hawkings has said about possible aliens - we are more like the indians than the settlers in that scenario. And it did not turn out too well for the natives. |

And it did not turn out too well for the natives. In the opening of the pilot when they were showing the kids drawings they talk about how the aliens targeted the military and their bases after knocking out all electrical devices. So everyone is in the dark with no real command structure or communication. That is why in the 2nd episode it was a big deal that they found other resistance and that they too had some kind of structure. Edited by Big Appa 2011-06-28 7:48 AM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have to say that there were a lot of issues I had with the second episode. SPOILER ALERT So when they were taking the harness off the kid, they put him on a morphine drip to compensate for the opiate the harness instills. But opiate withdrawals are not deadly - so why did the other kids die when they cut off the needles? Also, when the surgeon directed the doc to "look at his eyes" and she sees they are pinpoint - OF COURSE THEY ARE! YOU ARE GIVING HIM A MORPHINE DRIP!!! Their explanations for using the drip could have been much better handled - e.g. saying they found they needed to induce a medical coma in the same way we do now for certain types of trauma and brain injury.
I'm still hoping the show works for me. BSG is long gone, Firefly didn't last, and Walking Dead is still in between seasons. I need my good sci-fi shows... |

It's hard when it's medical - mrs gearboy used to get very agitated when we would watch ER due to the numerous violations of universal precautions (like walking around with bloody gloves). I have no problem accepting the presence of aliens and zombies. But those zombies better be medically accurate! |

I've got a buddy like that - it's really hard for him to watch the "Once Upon A Time in Mexico" trilogy, since so many of guns are complete fantasies. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() my wife and i watched it earlier this week and while it was sort of entertaining i have not gotten enough back story on a lot of the characters to be able to tie it all together now, other than the main family obviously. for me shows need to be strongly character and plot driven. there has to be a point to each episode as well as the series as a whole AND the characters have to be well developed, not necessarily complex, but well developed. this show has a good start but i think, like LOST for me, it will take a while for me to truly know if I like it or not, even though it is scifi and I am a huge scifi nerd. |
