Any of you who did IMKY last year what time do recommend getting in line? I am a 1:15 swimmer. Want to self seed myself in the right spot but not be in the back of the line.

The river is big enough, it's not a matter of swim speed or time, it's a matter of when you want to start. If you would be going crazy waiting from 5 am to 7 in line sitting around come later & be at the back, OR if the thought of waiting for 30 to 40 min. after the gun goes off makes you nuts be there early to grab a spot.
I was by myself almost the entire swim last year, but I was about #40 in the water so that might have had something to do with it.

On a similar note, I rad a race report where someone said they swam to the right side of the channel, as the current was weakest there. However, video seems to show most people going to the left side. What's the opinions of you vets from last year? (and yes, I know I am over-thinking this!)

NO! ! !   You're not Over-Thinking this, as I have had the same question.  I can swim, but I'm far from a Mark Spitz, so I have also been wondering about the right side of the channel.

Vets, speak up. . . .

We should figure out a time to be there so we just have a big BT group entry.

That's not a bad idea. Will you save me a spot?  I'll find you around 6:55.

It would be kinda fun to have a pack of BTers starting together.  On the other hand, it would severly decrease the anonymity usually associated with open-water swim "tactics."  In other words, I'll know if y'all punch me!

So they are planning a TT start again this year?  Guess they are going to make it a tradition?

I thought that I was giving myself plenty of time last year to get to the swim start. I ended up way back in line. Get there really early unless you want to sit around for a while after the start.

But, more importantly, you'll be asking yourself all day "did he do that on purpose?"

Gary, all IM's start at 7:00 AM. OK, not ALL I'm sure... but most.

I think I'll get there when I get there and see where I end up in line. I'm going to make sure I have water and gel with me in line. And I'm sitting down. I'm not going to get tired before the race waiting to race.

I can't imagine getting at line at 5 AM only to wait 2 hours. Can you get food? Water? Use the restroom? Just sounds like waiting that long would only make a long day even longer!

I am in no way encouraging others to arrive early, in fact, I think rolling in to transition around 5:30 or 6 am is a great idea, but for me,
I will bring a towel, some breakfast, a water bottle and my mp3 player. You turn in your end of the day bag there & there are porta potties avail. I am a morning person & get up at 4:30 everyday, so what's one more day.
We sat at the swim start the whole time.
Now that I have helped will you let me cut in line in front of you if you get there first? : ) Also don't forget that the walk from transition to swim start is around 10 - 15 min.

Sparty - 2008-08-13 2:37 PM What do you consider really early?

I am struggling to remember, but I think that I left the transition area a little before 6am. It was about a 10-15 walk to the swim start.

It's not a huge deal, so don't stress out over where you are in line. It was actually a really peaceful time as I sat and talked to the other athletes around me as the sun was rising. It was already warm out and I just sat on the sidewalk.

Not that I'm encouraging you to do so, but there were plenty of bushes and trees around that were used for last minute bathroom breaks. I wouldn't be surprised to see porta potties at the swim start this year.

Question for everyone - would you have a problem - ethically speaking - with planning to draft with someone (work together and take turns drafting) for the swim. It is legal, and I try to draft whenever possible in a swim, but somehow it seems differnt when I am planning it. The time trial start (and having someone who swims the same speed doing the race with me) presents this opportunity but I am just not sure. Feedback needed.

Did anyone respond about what side of the channel is the weakest current.. I know we get a practice swim in but I'd rather not spend a lot of time attempting to figure out which side the current is strongest.. I guess I can just get in line behind karen and david

Are you commenting on my navigation skills, and the likelihood that I'll be weaving back and forth all over the course?

I think that the LEFT side of the channel will be the place to encounter lighter currents:

The island will act as a shield from the main river current......I have spent many days in canoes and personally I would be nearer the island than the shore......water coming downriver will impact the "head" of the island and be forced aside (picture an rock/bolder in a creek) towards the shore where it will join with the rest of the downriver flow creating more water volume over towards the shoreline hence making more volume near the shoreline....some of that volume relief will mean less volume nearer the island itself (think of the slack water behind that rock in the creek).....make sense ........or if you are a trout fisherman....where are the fish holding? Along the banks (not undercut) or behind/alongside the rocks in those slack water areas??

YMMV,
Paul

From my research, stay close to the island (current is generally stronger in the middle of the channel) on your way out.  when you make the turn, then get in the middle of the channel, within reason, where the current is strongest.
