Subject: UPDATE: Official Iron Race Discussion Groups

We have just made some updates to keep it easy on the mods (thanks mods).

Now, any 'Start Group' or 'Start New Thread' link from a race that you have in your race log will go automatically to THIS Iron Distance forum.  This applies to Half and Full Iron races.  They will not go to the state forums anymore.

These threads will also get an 'Official Thread' designation in their title.

If a race does not have a group or thread associated, make sure it is in your planned log and click the 'Start Group' or 'Start New Thread' link.  Thread updates to these races are also part of your training and race log.

*NOTE, you will NOT be able to start a new thread or poll in this forum, it's only through the Iron distance races that you start a group with via your race log that a new thread will begin.

Triatty - I'm looking into IM Cozumel.

Kathy, any IM from other countries should go to this forum...I just verified for a Canadian HIM.  Though this new way of doing things is not retroactive.  If any IM race threads were started before this post, they will still most likely be in their state forum...anyone can pm me or marmadaddy with the race link and we can move it to this forum.

Ron, is there any way the titles on these can be changed somehow to include the year?  It's going to get really confusing around here if every year is just called Official IMXX thread...

Though this sounds real simple to do, due to the logic of this whole 'race directory' to account for people submitting races, trying to prevent duplicates and updating entries to the next year, this may not be easily doable.

Is the reason for this the fact that somebody may want to start an IM thread for the following year BEFORE the current year's one is over?

Or are you concerned that an older thread would get ressurected when the race is done and people wouldn't notice the date it was started for?

*note, there ARE two IMAZ threads for 2009 going around, it would probably be wise to end the one with 3 pages and for people to use the other one labeled as the 'official thread' as that one is linked in the race log and race listing. (since it was started before the change)

Once the race comes and goes we could freeze the old thread so it's still readable but won't get bumped and confused with the next year.

That can easily work, though I don't want to create more work!

I was just thinking, no concern really -- this year the enthusiastic IMAZ09ers who registered on-site started a thread before some of the IMAZ08ers had crossed the finish line (well, not really, but close).  It just seems like the year-ahead signup will be a challenge -- the people who finish a race (e.g., IMCDA09) will want to post about it in their "official" thread and the new registrants (IMCDA10) will want start their own, so will the threads end up having the same title, IMCDA official thread?

gailg...yes, I think that is the heart of this unique problem due to the new race date being available the next day after the old one is done...and the fact that IM races are more and more popular here (see homepage poll)....

Currently we keep the old thread tagged to the race listing for about a month later for people to finish RR's and finish up the thread-while still finding it easy in their log.  Then after a month people can start a new thread....this usually works perfect for most races as most triathlon RD's don't update to next years race that fast.

I don't think there is a way around this unless we have a 'merge thread' feature (which we don't)...I will have to see if this is available for this forum software.

These 'Official' threads are now in their new home to not clutter up the current Iron Distance talk forum.

I added Ironman Switzerland 2010 in my Race Log and in my calendar but I don't see the Start Thread button close to it. How can I make it?

It should show up in a week or two this month, we don't let a new race thread start as soon as the race is done as people are still commenting on the old one, so we wait a month (or maybe 2 weeks) until you can start a new one...I will update when it is available.

I don't get it yet. Can you please update it? Because I would like to start posting the training schedule for it, so some people can share the ideas...

We finally have this working, you should see the link to 'start thread' or 'start race group'. Though let me know if this doesn't work.  The problem was that I was missing was that these countries don't have a formal state forum associated with them, hence no link.  Again, sorry for the delay.
