Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I'm a little frusrated. I'll try to just stick to the points. At least a year and ahalf I have had pains right side abdomen under rib cage. Dr. says I'm fine and assures me it's not cancer. Thinks it's gall bladder, but it does not do normal stuff after eating. In fact, there is no consistency to pain at all... empty/full, day/night, busy/resting. Just any time really. Finally go to a endocronologist... I get blood work and scoped. Blood work is fine, scope shows mild ulcers. No bacteria, must be nsaids/stop taking. Go on therapy. Slack off.. go back on, do full treatment. Get scoped again, ulcers gone. I don't take nsaids anymore...pain still there. Endocronologist finally does abdominal catscan just to see if things look normal, and a HYTA scan for gallbladder. Both clean. HYTA scan shows gallbladder working good... but that is where the pain is. Finally Endo DR. is out of idea. Gives me a diagnosis of some "condition". I forget the name, but basically tells me it is "undiagnosed abdominal pain". His words, not mine. Gives me low dose of amyltripalene... antidepressent below theraputic level that helps with pain. Sort of helps, I go on with my life, stop taking. It's never goes away, and lately it is getting worse. Sometimes wakes me up. Sharp pain, just not "severe". Nagging irritating pain. Seems to be lower now, and every now and then, I get spasms on that side. Not like a charlie horse cramp, or twitching... just feels like my side tightens up and then it goes away. It is really bothering me. My annual pysical is coming up and I will tell my DO again to do some more blood work and send me to another Dr. I just don't know where to go, and I'm starting to get worried and irritated. I have looked at all the common stuff... Chron's, diverticulitus... I don't know. Any thoughts? Something sound familiar? Edited by powerman 2012-10-06 9:32 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am not a doctor nor will I try to be one...but the first thing that comes to mind is a food allergy. Have you kept a food log to see if it happens every time you eat (X)? (pineapple, corn, nuts?) Not all allergic reactions appear as breathing problems, some can be digestive... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A friend of mine had those symptoms last spring. Docs thought gall bladder. Then "stress", which is doc talk for "I really have no idea". Then around mid-June, she got much worse and went to the ER. Her appendix had ruptured. 5 day hospital stay. They think the appendix had been brewing for a while and never gotten severe enough to send up red flags. Just something else to consider. Hope you get an answer soon. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm pretty much a garbage disposal. I can eat anything with out any problems. No food log, but I have never noticed a problem after eating "something". Stuff like this sounds like digestive so I have been paying attention. Appendix is lower right and if I try to look for anything it always comes up. This is upper and it has been over a year and a half. I certainly do not expect anyone to be a doctor...it's just sometimes things are similar and it sparks something. A friend of mine had a wife that passed away, but she had a lot of problems and they thought it was gall bladder, but her HYTA scan was good too... they finally took it out and she was all better after that. I do not want to just start yanking stuff out, and removing a gall bladder isn't as harmless as some think.... but it is starting to sound good. |

Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I really feel for you. How frustrating. First of all, I'd start keeping a very detailed log of your activities and food/water, but most importantly, when the pain occurs, scale of 1-10, duration, quality. Regardless of what type of specialists or practitioners you go to, that's going to be important. Look, I'm a woman of science, trained in science. But often, for nagging chronic things, allopathic medicine (the way it's often practiced, certainly not altogether) just doesn't work. It really hasn't evolved for that. If I were you, I'd start looking into acupuncture, very traditional yoga (let's say the rheumatic series), hell, maybe even chiropractic. You're a smart guy--you know to look for folks with strong referrals from other smart folks. Try eating nearly perfectly. All whole foods, lots of fruits and veggies. Biofeedback/meditation. That's all I got, and that's what I've done when I've been desperate and in similar straits. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My Dr. is a DO, and she always asks me if I want the Eastern diagnosis, or the Western. Eastern is decision making and something unresolved. The wife has suggested a chiropractor, but I don't see it. Then again the specialists does not see it either... sooo. Probably until my next physical... a log would be the best place to start. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not a doctor and didn't stay at a holiday in express last night... that said, upper right quadrant can also be liver -- did they check your liver enzymes when they did the blood work? I sometimes get pain in the area you describe when my liver enzymes have gone wacky. my 2 cents. Robin |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Teejaay - 2012-10-06 4:14 PM Another possibility. Your back. Discs, joints, nerves. For 2.5 years I had constant pain in my lower right abdomen and low right back. Some days (several times per month for 2-3 days) it was unbearable. I even went to the emergency room twice thinking I had have an ovarian cyst or appendicitis. The pain was under my ribs, to low near my hip, in my lower back and ran down the front of my leg. Felt like cramping, burning and stabbing, I would bloat up, have digestive issues, awful. Had every blood test known to man, sonagrams and every orifice probed, diet change, allergies testing .. you name it they tested for it, for 2 years, many doctors. Nothing. Everything turned up perfectly normal. One time it was so bad I couldn't sit, stand, lay down, and my leg felt weird and my foot was floopy. They immediately did an MRI and they discovered a lot of facet arthrosis in my spine, bone spurs, osteoarthritis in my hip and back. Certain activities or inflammation were causing the nerves to be pinched, or ground between the facet joints. Nerves that would cause pain in the areas I was experiencing the "mystery" pain. PT, rest, stopped running and steep hiking, learned to sit, sleep, stand different ... haven't had that pain in 4 months. I still have low back and hip pain .. but it's manageable and I have resumed all of my workout activities (aside for a few) and so far so good. Took 2 years to figure that out .. who knew? I certainly had no idea nor did my doctors ever go there. But once they saw the MRI they were like .. ah, yes, that's a possibility and i was treated for it. That's what is so wierd... you just think you go to the Dr. and they tell you what it is. Nope. The endo guy laid out all the possibilites..... it's not like there are hundreds. Just a few really, but no dice so far. He just told me he's got nothing. Might not even be digestive.. could be muscle, bone, lung.. I figured muscle would have taken care of itself... nerves??? To top it off, I have some lump on the bottom of my foot. That seems to be getting worse. Things are not "severe"... just nagging, but I am not real happy about any of it. It's getting old. I guess I just wanted to vent. I have been perfectly healthy my whole life with nothing major. I'm "somewhat" concerned. |

When you've exhausted all of the "expected" sources, start looking for unexpected ones. Try massage, if you haven't already. I've only recently started (massages in China are SO CHEAP! $40 for 70 minutes) and while I was initially squeamish about having someone touch my body, it didn't take too long to relax. I had been having some knee pain and massage took care of it. Give it a try. Good luck. Also, is this the "lump" on your foot? |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Moon and others. When I look at pancreas and gall bladder problems, I don't have all the other digestive problems that come with them. Neauea, vomiting, diarhea, weight loss, bloating...ect. The Dr. also laid those out but ruled those out because of it. Not that it can't be wrong, but it does not fit well. Saturday it was really bothering me and by the end of the day I was pretty agrivated. I grabbed my skin just to pinch it to "distract" me from the other pain.... well that was the wrong thing to do. That set off a "episode" that was pretty bad. But that is the first time I have ever been able to manipulate it... meaning pressing, or proding, any movement, body position or posture... none of that effects it either... so that was wierd in it's self but does give me more info. Moon... the Morton's neroma I have seen. I first felt it and asked if it was a running thing and was told about that. Seemed to sort of fit then, but not really now. I felt like my sock was bunched up for a long time, but finally realized it was not that. It feels somewhat painful only in that it is a lump. There is no tingling or sharp pain, but everyone does not feel the same things. But now it just seems bigger, it has moved over a bit, and it is more painful (still dull/mild). So I don't really know on that one. My DO is a ex ballet dancer so she should probably be able to tell me something. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How many wheat products (gluten) are in your diet? I had similar experience, same results, went gluten free and pain went away. May not be the answer for you, but taking all the gluten out of your diet few a couple of weeks to see is a whole lot cheaper than paying for docs and tests. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well... it's gotten worse and sort of spread and it isn't my "abdomen". I finally told my doctor I am ready to be cut open. I told her of the new symptoms and she said it was nerves. Ordered an MRI, and I have a 8cm tumor on my spine that needs surgery. Consult with the neurosurgeon Monday.
I was kind of joking when I said I was ready to be cut open. |

Thanks guys. This has been going for over two years now. The nerves get pressed on and cause pain, but the area is not the problem, it's just the feeling. Last night I was just sitting there and felt like someone stabbed me. Worst by far, it isn't like that all the time. EDIT: sorry... it's benign. A ependymoma Anyway, surgeon had an appointment Monday, or next month, so I guess that went well. My Dr. seemed concerned and said take first available even if it was not the one she referred me to. Didn't exactly feel like running today. I have not called in sick in 8 years, hopefully they can take care of this on my days off. Edited by powerman 2013-04-12 7:26 PM |
