I'm really excited about this race! Only 5 weeks now. Two questions:

1) thoughts about using a disc wheel? I have aero disc covers (poor woman's disc wheel, lol!) which add 1 lb of weight to my bike. I've heard that it's not worth dragging 1 lb up climbs on a really hilly course.
I suppose I also need to look at what's in my saddle bag that I can get rid of.

2) thinking of using a camelbak instead of an aero drink bottle, to allow me to get into a tight tuck for the descents. The aero bottle gets in the way of me tucking my chin down low. But, what does a camelback do to aerodynamics?

Any thoughts?

I may ride the course this weekend. My friends who have ridden it already say it's tough and very hilly. My recommendation based on that would be to not ride with a disc due to weight -perhaps go with 808s or 404s instead? Not sure on the aero bottle -I would recommend going with what you are comfortable with.
FYI - I'm only doing a relay (swim leg) since I'm recovering from ITBS and doc says no to 13 miles right now. The good news is that I'll get to compete and watch the pros! Plus my relay is going to kick

No doubt your relay will kick it for sure on the swim.

I look forward to seeing how the race goes this first year. While down in FL I met the guy at a bike shop he may have been the owner who is going to be in charge at the bike course.

I don't know if Jamie is on BT or not, so thought I'd pass this along. He rode and ran the course last weekend and did a great blog post about it. Thinking definitely no aero wheels after reading his bike course review. =:-O

Thanks for reposting the link Carol. I'm here, (just not very active anymore).

If anyone has any questions that I didn't answer in the course preview, drop me a line. Leaving a comment on the blog or just sending me an email is the best way to catch me since I only visit BT sporadically these days.

Hi all, can't belive the race is only 3 weeks away! Does anybody know how cold the water might be? It's kinda unusually cold this past couple weeks. Is there like a minimum water  temperature by usta rules?

Ya, they're really not giving us enough information. Like water temperature. And also what specific things will be offered on the run course, nutrition/hydration wise. I did send an email to them today asking about tickets for friends/family to the amusment park. They got back to me by the end of the day. Their answer was that as long as it's reasonable number, they'll give them to us. There will be a separate booth at the expo for distribution of park tickets.

I'll ask them about water temperature. This fishing site reports 58 degrees, but I think it's not accurate.
http://www.fishingnotes.com/lakeinfo.php?id=3350
(That site also lists a local lake I swim in as 68, and I know it's more like 78, because I swim in it without a wetsuit!)

by 8am! if it's gonna be like this, I'll need to buy a new wetsuit ! don't think I can make
it with a sleeveless and will need to unpack my winter cycling jacket again....
Please warm up another 20 degrees!!

Crap, I wasn't thinking of preparing for cold air temps! Wunderground weather history shows like 50/68 as typical high/low for that date. I hate biking in the cold, so I hope it warms up!!!

I did buy a neoprene cap and booties for the swim, just in case. Got them from trisports.com using the BT discount, and total cost was about $50. I need them for a late season race anyway. Probably would not have bought them just for this race.

wow, that sounds cold. This looks like going to be a hard course overall. wonder if anybody has been to the course, and has any comments on how hard it is compare to other races? How would the bike course compare to rhode island for example, it looks a lot more technical for sure. and what about the run comparing to Timberman, maybe?

Hey, guys!!

It's just around the corner!!  I just wanted to say that I did an oly last year in water temps at 64 degrees.  I used my sleeveless wetsuit, and was fine (and I hate cold water!).  My feet were a little cold, but other than that, wasn't terrible.

I'm doing a relay (swim/run for me), so I don't have to worry about hopping on the bike out of that though!!

haha, it must be so hard, that jellyfish didnt' make it back !!Innocent
I'm prepared for a course that's almost approaching the category
of St. Croix 70.3 where you have padel really hard on downhills since
the wind is always in your face...

LOL! I ended up not riding the course. It was my 30th birthday last Sunday and I was a little hung over Monday morning. Those that did ride the course said it was not THAT bad. See link: http://targetraining.com/TTBlog.html

As for the water temp, I did a race in 59 degree water last Saturday. It was chilly at first, but after the first 200 yards or so it's fine.

Happy belated birthday, jellyfish! Thanks for the link to the course review...it has some good advice about how to approach the course. I can't wait to climb those hills. I figure if I keep telling myself that, I will be happy when I hit them Only one more week!!!!

Here are some weather links. So far, it's looking to be a nice day.

This Sunday, I’ll be wearing a Trakkers GPS at Rev3. On race day, you will be able to log online and see a blinking dot on a map of the race course that will move along throughout the day, transmitting my location, speed, etc. I hear that it will show the elevation and HR too, so that should explain it if you log on and see me slogging away at 11mph up one of the steep climbs. :-<b></b>)

If you want to track me during the race, go to http://www.trakkersgps.com/ click on “Track Events” then “Rev3″ and click on “Jameson Bull”. From there you should be able to see my progress throughout the day and stalk other triathletes from your couch.

My swim wave is set to start at 7:20 a.m. I’m hoping to be out of the water and on the bike by 8:00, back into T2 and on the run course at 11:00ish, and finishing somewhere around 1:00 p.m.

Carole Sharpless (the awesome Team Trakkers Athlete Coordinator) and Heather Gollnick will be doing live commentary during the race on http://rev3tri.com/. Lars Finanger will be sending text race updates to Slowtwitch.com.

Honestly. This race is so amazingly connected that the only way I could keep everyone more updated is if I was live tweeting during the whole thing. Sorry kids, that isn’t going to happen.

When racing, only race.

And kick butt!

I was just looking over race logistics and am confused about the athlete briefing. The website lists the two briefs as being at 11am and 4pm. However, the most recent email they sent out listed them as 2pm and 5pm. I'm assuming the email (dated June 1) is the more accurate source. Does anybody know anything about this?
