Hi Team Columbia,

Welcome to the Tour De France Bike Challenge 2008.

Home to possibly the best up and coming sprinters of the moment, Mark Cavendish, this team will be keen to coax their young star through the competition to build on this years success in the Giro D’Italia.

In the mountains and in the general classification the team will be looking their experienced rider from Luxembourg, Kim Kirchen, to lead the charge.

Kirchen is the current Luxembourg Time Trial Champion and this year has already won Fleche Wallonne and last year was 7th overall in the Tour De France.

The team captain, however, is former Lance Armstrong super domestique George Hincapie who is a phenomenal one day racer and should be out for stage wins while support Kirchen in the mountains. With five riders on the team under 25, Hincapie will provide the tactical and stage racing experience to support the younger riders.

On BT, your team line up for the challenge is:

1. ceilidh

2. Kenny Black

3. KrazyLegs

4. patricia7

5. peto_primo

6. roni_runnw

7. Shoeless

8. trainergirlmick

9. RedKnight

Now you have found the team thread, introduce yourself to your team mates below with some information which could include name, goals or info on your current bike(s).

Reporting for the challenge over the next three weeks will take place in three blocks matching the Tour De France racing days. The dates are as follows:

Week 1: 5th – 14th July

Week 2: 15th – 21 July

Week 3: 22 – 27 July

Your team has a tracking spreadsheet set up and active in google spreadsheet.

To open the spreadsheet click on this link: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pfYL7DR_dx-BUDYckTTnqcw&... />

To login to Google Docs:

Username: btchallenge

Password: challengeforum

You can update the spreadsheet at any time to track your own, and your teams progress. I will be grabbing each teams results to date and posting a challenge update that includes all of the teams progress and any interesting tid bits from the various team threads. This update will be posted at the end of the each reporting week listed above.

The winning team will be determined by the team with the highest percentage of goal achieved. No one can go over 100% of goal and if more than one team hits 100% then there is more than one winning team!

To remind everyone to post their updates, and I recommend that you nominate a team leader to help with reminding everyone to report in each week. But the job of inspiring and motivating your team mate really does rest with each individual so don’t forget to give everyone some regular encouragement here in the team thread and through inspires on training logs.

I will try to pop in regularly to see how your team is getting on. If there are any questions throughout the course of the challenge let me know, I will pop back in the next 24 hours with some additional information and rider profiles for your Tour De France team before the action kicks off on the roads of France.

Happy Pedaling

Cat

Hey gang. Rob from Ontario Canada. 55 yrs old and grandpa to a gourgeous little girl and a rambunctious little boy. I am new to the triathlon sport this year. So far I have done 2 super sprints and am training for a full sprint in about a month. My goals for this challenge are probably somewhat lower than most of yours as my training time is limited. 6 stages 4 hours 15 minutes.
My background is in karate so distance racing is quite a change for me but I am enjoying it. My training log is open to anyone interested in viewing it.
Good luck to every one on the team and let's win this challenge.

Happy Independence Day! I'm Heidi in Montana; wife to a supportive, patient, and wonderful husband. Mom to three teenage girls. This is my second year of triathlon. I've done two sprints. I have two sprints scheduled for August, and an OLY in Sept. Wanted to race in July, but other obligations are taking up the weekends.

My goal for the tour is to do 6 stages for a total of 210 miles.

I would be happy to make a team chart, if no one opposes, and I'll be captain unless someone else is anxious to do it. I will confess, I keep the spreadsheet updated, but I'm not very good at inspires.

Hello all,

First of all, thanks Cat for setting all this up.

I'm Patricia.  I competed at the Triathlon World Championships in Vancouver in early June, was in the best shape of my life at 48.  Unfortunately, it was rainy and cold and I suffered hypothermia, bike crash, concussion, etc...  I still can't move my right shoulder / arm much but I'm very motivated to get back into the best shape of my life.  I'll be riding on my Computrainer - 10 stages, 450min.

Heidi, thanks for volunteering to be captain and updating spreadsheet.  Looks like we're going to have lots of fun and we've quite a few Cdns on the team.  I already have a team chart done here.  Feel free to cut and paste.

Wow Patricia. Sounds like you had some really bad luck out in Vancouver. I hope you're recovering OK.
Hard to believe that you are up and trainng again already with your shoulder being still out of whack. You are definitely an inspiration to those of us without injury to try harder and make sure we not only meet but exceed our goals.

Sorry to hear my home treated you so badly. It was so cold that day! I had gone out and watched.

I'm Jeni a grad student at UBC currently dating my bike Just started triathlons this year but have some hip issues running so the bike took over. I am becoming addicted to mountains as well. And I just bought my first TT bike... hurray for aerobars! I will be doing my first 40km TT in august. So perhaps you can help me figure out the second half of my goals for the challenge.

When I first posted I said I wanted to do 5 rides that included a Cat 1 climb, 4 rides that include a Cat 1 and 2 rides on my TT bike to mimic these stages in the tour. But I guess I have to post a distance/time instead.

Now the nearest mountain is a 3 hour ride/ 70km ish. The Cat 4 climb is right out side my door so 15 minutes/2km and basically any ride I do will include this hill to get back home. And the nearest flat/straight piece of road is about 40min from here so an 1.5 hour ride/50km ish or on the trainer to get those intervals in.. woowhoo.

Now its pretty easy for me to rack up the miles but I want the motivation to go hit the mountains. Any suggestions on how I should quantify the second half of my goals?

I will also be out of town from July 6-10 so I will be cramming my stages.  Expect my first mountain stage to be tomorow!

Hey Jeni good to be on the team with an expert rider. I am beginnig to think I'm the only guy on the team. Which by the way is OK with me.
Anyway, I can't help you too much with getting to the mountains. The hills I ride around here would look like speed bumps to you.
Incentive? I could do a cheer for you but it would just make you laugh hard enough to fall off your bike.

Maybe have someone drive you into the mountains and make you ride back. Enitce you with your favorite food?

Hmm Im pretty sure one of your other team mates is male, but apart from that I think you are definatley in the minority here..

One thing i dont look at when I throw the teams together is gender so you the teams tend to end up all over the place... in fact I somehow outnumbered myself on my own team!

ok. I was thinking of applying  points for each of the three different kind of rides. So maybe I will log that instead of minutes or times. In the tour the first person up  a Cat 1 climb gets 15 points and on a cat 4 climb they get 3. And the first in a TT also gets 15. So that's 117 total for my planned stages. Who's riding tomorrow?

So if I am after the poka dots who's after the other jerseys?

Anyone willing to step up and throw in a few 1 minute sprint intervals in each of their stages and go after the green jersey?

While we're not all youngsters who is the newest to the bike/ has just discovered their love of it? White jersey anyone?

Peto_primo has the most minutes planned so does that mean you're going for yellow?

there are also the p"rix de combativité" for the most aggressive riders... so I say we will have to decide who is the most motivated and inspire addicted team member as the challenge goes on to give them this award.  or who ever has the best trash talk for the other teams

Hi Team,

Just a reminder that when talking about events in the actual Tour De France there is a 24 hour ban on posting about recent action from the French roads in either your own team thread or other teams. This is because a lot of people have to work while the live coverage is on which means they do not get the chance to catch up on what is happening in the roads of France until later in the day.

If you do want to chat about the event in France there is a Tour De France forum located here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/forum-view.asp?fid=122#s for the duration of the event.

Otherwise Im usually hanging out in beginner chat whenever I have live stage coverage as well... and always happy to chat Tour with ANYONE and EVERYONE!

Morning all. I am Robin, I am 48 and just starting at all of this. I live in the mountains of North Carolina so I seem to be the southern most person here ( my mountains also are mere bumps to you all). I will do my first Sprint in September and just started training a couple of months ago. I am probably the newest to riding but I am NOT loving it. Let me restate: I LOVE mountain biking but am terrified of road biking due to an unfortunate event with a driver who deliberatlly hit me. My new favorite saying (to myself) is "buck up buttercup", so I joined this challenge to hit the road. (Oooh, bad phrase!).

I got up and did a 45 minute ride this morning. I thought I had gotten up earlier than the tourists but nope, they were all up driving to find the nearest place to eat breakfast. So I mad a concerted effort to enjoy the ride.... it is going to rain soon so the air was heavy with humidity and the honeysuckle scent was wafting around, wildflowers blooming and summer bugs starting to hum. The river I ride by was beautiful and kingfishers and a crow laughed at me as I rode slowly uphill. Had to stop to save a turtle from traffic....If I concentrate on all that.. I love riding. Have great rides all.

Hey Everyone,

I am Michele from Wisonsin and am also new to the sport of triathlon.   Did my first tri 3 weeks ago, an Olympic, and had a blast!  Came in at 3:09;29, and was happy with that for my first effort.  Have signed up for 2 more this season, one sprint and another Olympic.

Most of my rides will be in the spin room as I am a spinning instructor.  I get outside 1-2 times a week as well.  I signed up for 12 stages, 250 miles.

Looking forward to the Challenge!

Hi All,

My name is Kenny (in case you hadn't worked it ou from my cryptic BT name) and I am 33 years old. I am originally from Scotland and now live in New Mexico (so Robin....I think I may be further south!).

I am also new to triathlons this year and completed my first Sprint in May. I have a few more planned for this year but my goal is an Oly at the end of Sept.

Before this year I used to run very occasionally and swim during the summer (but more for fun than for speed or distance) and I had never ridden a road bike till April of this year so I am definitely a newbie to the cycling world....but I am really starting to get into it so I thought this would be a good challenge.

My goals for the challenge are 10 stages for 180 miles. Most of mine will probably come from my commutes to work since I have an approx 20 mile round trip, but I like to try and get a longer ride in on my days off so I will make the rest up from those.

Looks like we have a good mixed team.....let's go for it!

Rob, what's your next race after Owen Sound?  I'd love to recover and race with you before the end of the season.

Hey Jeni, don't know whether I can challenge you for the polka dot jersey, but I'll be doing hill repeats and improving my power threshold on the Computrainer.  But first, I'll have to figure out what all these different cat climbs mean?  BTW, I did the Stanley Park loop and it's beautiful, and a lot easier than the vitual one on CT.

Robin, good for you for getting back on the bike after a bad experience.  Not sure if you've read this article about riding defensively from Slowtwitch.  Enjoy your rides but be careful of crazy drivers.

Kenny and Heidi, how do you set a picture as the background on your log? Looks nice.  I'd like to get our team members names on the Team Columbia jersey.

Michele, looks like both of us would be riding indoors a lot.  I tried to add the TV channel that has TdF coverage (OLN) so I can tape and watch it while I'm on CT but carrier said I can't just add that one channel.  Bummer.  My first stage is a 1hr ride tomorrow.  I got to find some TdF CT courses and load it onto my computer.  I think there is a CT Alpe d'Huez course somewhere.

Hi Patricia, I think Dee (D001) posted how to do the whole team links thing in a separate thread, but I have not tried to follow the instructions and do this for myself yet.

 http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=97624&posts=21&start=1

I think Dee actually made the one for July CASUAL run challenge that I have posted on my logs at the moment.

Hi all y'all.  I am Scott and I am the father of 3.85 kids.  For the fun of the tour I went for 21 stages.  I always considered myself more of a domestique, but if I need to be the teams "yellow jersey contender" I'll do it for the team (besides peto_primo was my loose latin translation for Seek First).

I will probably bump up the projected hours (since I looked at my training plan after I posted my time), but I reserve the option of reducing it if that .85 of a kid becomes a full #4 by more than a week early (due date is Aug 4 but inhouse projections are looking more like the last weekend of Le Tour)  any earlier than that and I will fall short.
